Thank you! I fish generally the same area, the mouth of the farmy will have some cows in the coming weeks. Whats the depth like at the top of the island on the farmington riv side, its usually shallow, but the level is way up!! Taking the boat up that way this weekend. Also another great lure is the live target blueback herring swim bait, they are awesome!!

Hey guys,

A lot of great knowledge here and 99% of you seem friendly. I've been trying to learn as much as I can about fishing but I never seem to catch much. I do own a small boat but have never taken it north of Hartford. I've been trying to figure out how to get to the mouth of the Farmington? Is it possible by foot? It looks like you can walk in to the Farmington, but I can't tell how to get to the mouth area. Do you park at The school there? Is that allowed at night? I have gone to vibrant road, but never any success and am looking for advice on access. Im using my spinning gear for the stripers but I also fly fish, not sure if anyone else does so I'd be willing to meet up sometime too.

I like to target areas no deeper than 9 ft. I really like to use stick bait type lures with a slow retrieve. When its time anywhere on the river is a great spot.

Rook speaks the truth! Its not where? Its how/when! How's that song go... " I was in the right place, but it mussta beeeen the wrong time!" This holds true for fishing for the striped beast!!

So does that mean you don't know anything about foot access to confluence of Farmington and CT?

absolutely killed it last night! first fish 15min in was 29" slowed down for a little bit with some decent 15-20" schoolies. At about 1am i started throwing topwater plugs on the shade line of one of my favorite bridges. THE WATER STARTED EXPLODING. I had 3 back-to-back hookups, most of the fish over the next hour were honestly 26"+ we lost count. Right before we left, on the hike back to my truck i gave my buddy my 7' hvy/fst Croix Tidemaster with a Stradic Ci4 and 30lb braid with a black bomber on it. he snuck down thru some tight brush for a couple of casts in a hole we know about. 2nd cast in he hooked up with something BIG, i heard the drag peeling off my stradic and was absolutely filled with excitement, ive never even heard the thing scream like that. After about 10 min he got it close (10ft) to the bank but he had locked up the drag completely bringing it in and it took one last hard run and broke off, i think the braid was frayed looking at how it snapped. from what i saw it was 36 or better. said it felt like dead weight when he hooked it for a lil bit, def a slob! no bs. i was pissed, he was pissed, so we packed it up. im about to take a nap and head out tonight. ill have a pic up later of the first fish. GET OUT THERE EVERYONE!!!!

Sounds more like a pike at the end there. They feel like a log and have good enough teeth to screw with that braid. Unless your hitting a bunch of rocks, I doubta striper could significantly mess up braid . Call me an a#$hole, but just my opinion.

Ps, honestly not trying to be an ass.

Ok, its official! I'm a striper only guy. All others can keep fresh water bs! When my 6 year old daughter catches better trout than daddy does I'm done! Give me river sludge and salt all day! Give me the big boy fish! I suck at fresh water! Now let the making fun of night fisher begin!

nightfisher: the teeth on largemouth bass will wear through braid at and around the hook. I recently started implementing short, 4-6" super light (16lbs) wire leaders into my rigs for night fishing to avoid having to retie in the dark. I did this only after losing a few rigs to large fish and wondering "how the hell are these things cutting the braid?" I came to realize, that after a few landed fish, the sandpaper-like teeth were wearing the line around or at the knot (polymar) enough so that if I didn't retie, an attempted hook set on a subsequent fish was enough to snap the line at the fray. The leader has eliminated this problem without negatively affecting the bite to hookup ratio. While we will never know the species of the fish that snapped the braid in this post, I think its perfectly plausible the striped bass teeth could wear through braid the way I have found LMB do.

I'm with you all the way NF! I grabbed a trout pole to take my son the other day for the first time in a few years and didn't know how to use it anymore! It felt like such a toy in my hands! I used to be pretty good at trout fishing but man do I suck now. I really couldn't enjoy even trying to whip out such a small lure! I'll still go until my don cahoot's handle throwing bigger stuff for stripers but the second he can I'm done with fresh water!!!!!
