Went out with Advent on West Lake Res. for some night crappie fishing. Got out there about 2-2:30AM with snow falling pretty well. Found where NorthEastFisherman got on the ice earlier the day before so we used his rock to plank bridge. Decided to aug our way out to see how the ice was. 5 feet from the end of the plank was 3 inches and 5 feet from that went to 4 inches. We deceided to cautiously walk out. Found 4 inches of constant black ice under us. So we drilled a few holes and set up 1 tip up each considering the weather. Ended up with no flags at all. As for jigging we dropped in the first hole Advent has drilled and he had good aggressive hits instantly. With in about 5 minutes he had pulled up a 13 inch crappie. Another 5 minutes later a 12 inch crappie. I didnt even have a touch so he says "Dude take my hole, seriously!" As soon as I lift my jig off the bottom it was like morse code. I pulled up a 13 inch crappie too! So I kept going and shortly after got a 9 incher. Then it went silent. Small light touches. So we switched up holes and jigged around and I decieded to go back. Thinking I gave the honey hole a rest maybe they came back. I drop in and within 2 minutes I pulled up a 7 incher. About 5 minutes later or around 3:30AM we decided we were getting to wet and cold with all the snow falling to keep going and it was time to call it quits. Weather was nasty and the roads were horrible. Luckly we both got home safe. With this cold I think the edges will fill in soon and the plank wont be needed and that will be nice. Ill be back out there Friday. Ill have another report for you then. Very Happy Enjoy!

That 1 hole must have been right near the edge of a weed bed.

A buddy and I were ice fishing Dog Pond in 2011 and I was jigging in a hole right near him. I kept on hitting lots of crappie while he was hardly getting anything. Decided to carefully drill a hole right near where I was jigging and found weeds.

i think it depends on where you go.

I have fished a local res and couldnt find much near any weeds
between jigging tip ups and using an under water camera

we caught all of our perch crappie in bass in open sandy bottom areas.

maybe Ill get out on west lake this weekend with a flasher and underwater camera

awesome fishing guys. I am getting a bit jealous

night fishing must be pretty creepy especially with this weather we've had

Snagged a pick of them in my sink because we wouldnt get a camera to work out in the weather. Those were the two 13 inchers. My parents ate them for dinner.

Thanks we just got lucky but we will be out there all day Friday. The nights arent that bad out there. Very quiet. The snow plows were the loudest thing last night.

I know a place with BIG crappie.

The only problem is that, you need to walk back up a decent size hill to get back to your car, walkin down is the fun part =)

I rather not just stop there to find its not safe, so maybe by the end of the month if the 3 of us (or whom ever else wants to come) are all free at the same time we can go there.

Have to find out when Advent and you are free (or whom ever else wants to come) Laughing I can make time for fishing at any time.

I think i know where youre talking about, if so thats my secret reservoir! Do you remember going out there and seeing two kids and a parent with a black ht shanty and we told you guys that some ice skater said to not drill randomly all over the ice? If so thats me and thats my favorite jigging lake.

It was a secret but yep thats me Smile . LEt me tell you that place is FREAKING CRAZYY!! I Honestly think i caught the state record perch there but didnt think twice about getting measurements and brought them home and ate em. I've studied that place very well, i know the flats, dropoffs, hot spots, weedlines, EVERYTHING. I love that place but its not meant for a tip-up zone its more jigging in a shanty type place. Last year i wore my green snowboarding coat and i dont know if i used my shanty on there. I gotta big green sled but i think im one of maybe 3 people that fish there so you probably saw me. Lots of people pass by, wave, honk, scream out the windows saying good luck and so on. They think us icefishermen are crazy!!!

A lot of those people probably think that you shouldn't be out there at all. City of Danbury Ordinance Sec. 21-16, entitled "Trespassing on, injuring reservoirs, damaging waterworks property" states:
Quote:
Every person who shall disturb, meddle with or fish in the waters of the reservoir, or skate or walk upon the ice of said reservoirs except with the express permission of the superintendent of public utilities, or shall trespass upon any part of the grounds connected therewith, except upon the walk, or shall willfully injure any pipe or other property used in connection with the waterworks shall, in addition to any penalty established pursuant to state law, be subject to a fine of not more than one hundred dollars ($100.00).

FYI. Wink

we use to work the sh1t out of the bass there

as you guys have been doing, definitely post up or at least pm me where you find safe ice

not many guys on this site fish around here so it makes it difficult to find people who fish small ponds.
