Hey everyone, today I was a bit busy earlier in the day and couldn't get out until mid afternoon. so I decided to hit the Farmington for a few hours.

I fished a pool in Farmington. I fished it a week after opening day and hit some very nice rainbows. Today I managed 3 small mouths and a salmon on worms. I've had very little success with lures of any sort this year in the Farmington. I was shocked to see the small mouths because the area I was fishing had fast moving water. I heard rumors that CT put a bunch of fingerling salmon in recently and boy they were going nuts on the top of the water. It looked like bluefish blitzing. I fished from 1:45-2:45. I avoided the skunk which was good.

There was a gentlemen fly fishing next me and he wasn't doing to well either.

Curious what town you were in catching smallies. I've heard reports of them in the colder trout waters of the West Branch. Trying to confirm with rod and reel but have yet to.

I was catching them near the River Front Mini Golf in Farmington. They weren't huge but they were decent

The state has been putting juvenile "fingerling" salmon in since as far back as I can remember, especially heavy thru the west branch by the bike path in avon/burlington

What's the purpose of stocking tiny salmon? Anyone know? And are they "growing" them in the hatcheries with the trout?

Hi,

The salmon smolt are raised seperately and stock in certain streams so that they get imprinted with that particular stream scent so that after they go to sea and grow -> will come back as mature salmon to that particular stream to breed.

I spent a few hours on the farmington tonight after work but couldnt get a bite on anything. I tried meal worms, phoebes, 3 different rooster tails, gulp minnows, and a few other lures but no luck. Some guy across the river caught a few nice sized fish but i couldn't tell what they were. I even went and tried his spot but nothing.

A couple big beavers were swimming around most of the evening. The guy who was catching left when they showed up. Do beavers make for bad fishing? He was slapping the water a bunch.

This was my third try at this spot on the farmington and it has yet to produce for me. Any good tips for fishing the river? I was near that one lane bridge right by 202 if anyone knows the spot.

At the beginning of April, a buddy of mine caught a 3-1/4 pound smallie in Collinsville, just below the axe factory. I think that he was live-lining a shiner from his kayak. I know that West Branch Reservoir is loaded with smallies, although I didn't get any with any size to them. SeaDog1 got a nice one over in Colebrook River Reservoir, though.

Go to page 12 and page 14 of the Ct. Angler's Guide to read up on Atlantic Salmon in Ct.

Also under the DEEP web site, under fishery managment programs (Atlantic Salmon).

Beavers do the tail slapping thing when they get startled or sense danger. It makes perfect sense that the fish would interpret the slap as a warning of a predator in the area as well. Never really thought about it until now, but I've had productive areas shut down immediately after a tail slap.
Unfortunate if there is a correlation, those dam beavers are always around when the topwater conditions are perfect.

Pretty accurate. . .danger in area~~~~>beavers slap the water~~~~>nearest fish senses it on lateral line~~~~>fish sends off stress signal~~~~>starts a chain reaction of other fish releasing all sorts of chemicals and stress signals~~~~>might as well just head home since the whole river of fish know you're there now. I now blame all my bad days of fishing on beavers! >.<

That's hilarious. Usually when I see beavers they just cruise by me and wave. Become friends w the beavers and catch all the fish Smile
