Finally found a pattern for Bowfin here in CT. Still backwaters off of the river fishing the bottom with night crawlers and even a bobber has consistently produced a bunch of Bowfin for us this spring. Time of day doesn't seem to make a difference. They are gorgeous fish and they fight like bulls!!! |

YES!!!
I've never got one yet.
Been going to Scovill's for awhile and no luck so I gave up on them, my wife got one about 16 inches there years ago on a night crawler.
Possible to send me a PM to tag along with you? |

i don't like using nightcrawlers for targeting fish. i feel you catch everything else in the river b4 you finally catch what you're after. especially the "nuissance" fish (perch, sunnies, bullhead, etc) when you're targeting big fish. use shiners on a 3-way or fishfinder rig off the bottom with the lightest steel leader you can find. at least if you catch somethin else b4 your bowfin, it'll be somethin worth while. bass, pike, big cat, monster perch.
if you explore some, you can find places that hold shiners, get a trap or angle for em _________________ ...of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy.

JimiChanga - I was making regular trips to Scoville and targeting bowfin too. Saw them gulping air, had one slash my line, but couldn't land one. I caught a surprise bowfin last year in the same manner jimbojonez describes...nightcrawler, from a slow-moving cove channel off the river (trying for cats.) Awesome fish! I'm definitely continuing to pursue them. It's just about spawning time, the males should have nice bright turquoise fins. _________________ Kira

Went to Scovill with my good friend "Metalfish" several times from shore. Wanted to throw the boat in but never got around to it. Now seeing that gasoline is going to be a serious issue this fishing season, perhaps the boat will go into Scovill.
Maybe get a bunch of us together and see how we all pan out? Boats, kayaks, shore etc...? Just an idea.

Scoville has that terribly inconvenient "operation of vessels prohibited from sunset to sunrise" rule. How does that work on opening day? Is it enforced? Fishing season becomes official one minute before sunrise. I guess I'm wondering if it's possible to launch a vessel without operating it. _________________ Kira

Then again no ones going to see kayaks or tiny boats on the lake at night |

I've caught a few of these in FL and in MN. These are some of the best fighting fish out there for sure! |

That's why I asked if it's enforced...at some places the police patrol/perform a searchlight scan of the water if there are vehicles present in the parking lot. _________________ Kira
