Guys do fish chunks on the Derby side. They will usually fish to the left while the guys fishing plugs will move up toward the dam. If the water is running it is a real problem for everyone and is usually a waste of your time.
I'd fish chunks downriver a bit, either out on the point near the parking lot where the fire training school used to be (fireman's island?) or downriver more near sunnyside or the gazebo. Keep in mind they are actually hitting sandworms or bloodworms pretty well right now.

Yeah, typically thewaters running a little too fast so even with a big wait youll get dragged down and youll just get snagged every other cast there by doing that anyway so if you aint getting beat up they will just be laughing at you.

| ok well knowing that i think i might just hit my normal spot and wait for my buddy to get back from vacation to try new spot but i will keep stafford beaches in mind thanks guys. is it much different using lures or plugs from chunk baits? i know i need to broaden my fishing style along with the areas so any help is a great thing. i have used hula poppers for large mouth bass is it anything like that? |

Just the price of the lures basically and youll need to know if your rod can handle the bigger lures. At the Dam a 1-3 oz popper works really good as usually unless you are there at like 3 in the morning you are not going to be able to get a nice close spot to the falls and will want to cast out quite a bit as its shallow where you stand. Tight to the falls is mostly where the bait gets trapped so that is where big fish will be for the most part. Obviously youll be doing a lot more casting!

Saltwater rod and reel setup and baits and lures are a whole different story than freshwater BR.
Bigger fish, longer heavier lures, stronger line, heavy weight for chunking.
A setup just for snapper bluefish would be a trout and panfish setup.
A setup for smaller stripers and bluefish while throwing smaller plugs and topwaters would be your typical medium action freshwater. Lures would range from a 3" lipless crankbait to a 4 1/2" plug.
8+pound bluefish and keeper stripers are when a heavier setup is needed with bigger lures as if you're fishing for big pike and muskie.
Strong rods, reels, and line is needed for chunking because you have heavy weight to get the bait out and under. |

Yep, like I said in another post if you want a cheap but decent set up for chunkin or big lures Id let 1 of mine go very cheap. Im an idiot and when I got started I went overboard and now have 5 set ups for this!! Dont ask me why cause I dont know. It would be a 9' medium heavy pole with a Okuma Baitcatser reel. Not looking to get rid of it but will for someone who needs to get started. Has fresh Trilene big Game 20 lb on it.

| went fishing last night yeah!!! no stripers yet but i have a weird question. has anyone ever caught a fish by line not the hook? I caught an american shad that got tangled up in my line lol shad are good bait for stripers right? so that means they should be in the area soon? thanks for the offer but I have a 12ft shakespeare alpha big water pole a 10 ft tsumani pole with a mitchel reel a 8 ft jarvise walker pole and reel and a 7 ft wicked stick i want to put okuma 50s on the 7ft and 8 fters and 60s on the 10 and 12 fters of course gotta go with the bait runners |

bait runners are good, one of this days I will pick up a reel with one!!
Until then, when I am fisghing chunks , I'll just watch my line and rod end =P
Once the housy turns on we can have a ctfishtalk outing from the rocks

I use the Omni glow click on glow sticks. They are bright as heck and last for 2 nights and the next morning before you need to replace them. They snap on tight on most poles except the really really thick saltwater poles and will not come off no matter how hard you are throwing or what your throwing out there!

| i dont use tape i leave the zip ties on for the next set of glow stisks i have had trouble with tape letting the stick spinning on the pole i dont know how but it did only me that stupid stuff can happen to i am telling you i am hexed at some stuff! hoping to actually fish tommorow for my actual bday didnt think it was possible but ripline appreciate the wishful thinking i byaccidentaly caught i think it was an american shad that got caught in my line and tangled up about 9 ft above my weight weird stuff man weird stuff!!!!!!!!!! |

| went fishing fo my actual bday yesterday still skunked but had a real good hit but no results from it! guys said about 10 30 incher were caught all week in norwalk but damn it if i couldnt catch a break for my bday oh well there is still plenty of time to get lucky with my record fish for this year. good luck to everyone!! |
