TurtleKiss (aka Kira) and I hit Nod Brook WMA again today, from 9:30 am to 4:45 pm. The air temperature was in the 50s and the sky was overcast all day. It rained from 1:15 pm to 2:45 pm and then from 4:00 pm to 4:45 pm, but it was really just a drizzle. The water temperature hung around 46 degrees. Kira was, to put it mildly, eager to catch a largemouth bass. It was ladies' choice and she chose the upper (i.e., south) pond. Like yesterday, she pedaled The Other Woman and I paddled El Habañero. Unlike yesterday, however, about 30 minutes after we got on the water, she very wisely asked for my sage advice on how she should fish the pond. Cool

I told her to throw wacky rigged five inch green pumpkin/red flake Senkos. You didn't see that coming, did you? She was reluctant, but gave it a shot. And 30 minutes later, she pulled up this little fish:

Now THAT's the way to get a month's worth of skunk off of you! With a 21 inch, four pound, eight ounce largemouth bass, baby! Unfortunately, while the wacky rig was working for Kira, it wasn't working for me. I was trying my best to avoid catching the skunk when I caught this little otter, instead:

Sorry, that's the best I could do. I had the wrong lens, again, and it was very shy. Meanwhile, the wacky rig was still working for Kira and she caught a 13 inch largemouth bass:

It took a long time, but I finally got a nibble on my wacky rig. And on the next cast, I landed a 12 inch largemouth bass:

I later lost a 16 to 18 inch largemouth bass by the beaver lodge on the north end of the east shore. Much cursing followed that one. We threw some other lures besides the wacky Senkos, but all of the action was on the wacky Senkos. I threw a Texas rigged 10 inch Zoom Ol Monster swirlytail worm until something bit the swirly off of it. I also threw a half ounce War Eagle black and blue spinnerbait with double colorado blades, a six inch Creme worm on a Powerbait spoon jig and a Yum Mardi Gras (i.e., green/purple flake) tube. While we didn't catch another fish, and the weather turned a bit wet and cold, Kira's four and a half pounder made the whole day.

That was a Mink you saw Exclamation

I needed that bass to break my slimedart curse. I got nibbles and taps all day. Both fish were caught on the wacky senko, but I did try a lot of soft plastics in varying colors as well. The pumpkin/watermelon may work, but I try to avoid them just because they're so popular and I'm a bit of an oddball. My preferred colors are black and Okeechobee craw. Phil always catches at least one bass on his "typical" senkos so I gave it a shot. What can I say...it worked. Boring, slow retrieve. There also was some interest in my jig and a Zoom Mardi Gras trick worm. No interest in a small chartreuse spinnerbait, rattletrap, or the DS. The fish were on the bottom, and just about all of them were marked at about 1-2 ft off the bottom. This was another small place...south pond is deeper and has far less weeds. Most of the central areas were 7-12 feet, with areas in the back up to 17 feet, then super-shallow past that and around the edges. Much more territory to cover.

Mason - I was originally wearing a Flyers jersey, but the fabric and the numbers were so damn stiff! Any idea how to soften them? I love that I can wear about 20 layers of clothes underneath hockey jerseys, at the expense of looking completely shapeless.

LOL! Stephen, I just asked my wife whether there are wild ferrets in Connecticut. It could have been a mink, too, I guess. I wasn't sure whether it was an otter, because it appeared to be solitary and the two times that I'm certain I saw otters this year (i.e., on the Farmington River in Tariffville and on Manitook Lake in Granby), they were in a romp of at least six.

I vote for Mink -> Probably feeding on craydads!

From the photos, yeah, I'd have to agree with you that it's a mink. But we'll hear what the Wildlife Division of the DEP has to say. Here are a few more photos of it:

After having a tick in my arm pit recently and not catching much of any thing lately I have thought about waiting for hard water to go back out.

Yup it looks like an american mink. Distinguished by the white patch under their chin which appears visible in the last picture of Phil's last post.
