I haven't heard back from the Bureau of Natural Resources yet, but the owner of Connecticut Outdoors in Oakville, Dave Farber, told me that wild mink have taken over the huge beaver lodge underneath the tree near the beaver dam at the mouth of the Bantam River. So I'm ready to concede that the weasel I spotted on the beaver lodge at Nod Brook is a mink.
Thanks, Stephen! And happy birthday, you old salt! _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

If you want a lot of bass hit weed lines before drop offs on the deepest part of lakes. Use a big ass crankbait a rapalla j-11 either on the top twitching or about 8ft under. There all staging near the depths before they chill for the winter., Also a sixteenth oz tube worked slow will get um to hit. Like a nine to ninethirty with one or two cranks in-between. Just my fyi |

There called thermals. Shirt and pants are ten bucks at Walmart. Wear um tight like spandex. So there basicly another layer of skin. There in the men's underware deptment |

PECo wrote: | LOL! Stephen, I just asked my wife whether there are wild ferrets in Connecticut. It could have been a mink, too, I guess. I wasn't sure whether it was an otter, because it appeared to be solitary and the two times that I'm certain I saw otters this year (i.e., on the Farmington River in Tariffville and on Manitook Lake in Granby), they were in a romp of at least six. |

I've been wearing thermals under my jeans for the past 2 weeks. They suck. I've tried the velvety ones too, which are maybe a little better. Regardless, by the time I get home from a long hard day of fishing my thighs feel like blocks of ice and my husband won't let me go near him.
Nothing that compares to the warmth of real fur. Maybe Snuggie does but I'd die from the embarrassment of wearing one in public. In conclusion, I want mink pants. _________________ Kira

Hi Kira!
The key to staying warm is wicking moisture away from your body so as to stay dry and layering!
NOTE: Stay away from "ANYTHING" made of or with cotton -> Holds moisture, does not wick, and as all mountaineers know is the "DEATH FIBER" because it can freeze to your body
I have a set of all silk black winter underwear which is the absolute best and wicks moisture away. (Expensive but worth every penny - Check Internet for sales) -> Synthetic Thermals will do if followed with the below.
Purchased 2 pair of "all wool" military pants with thigh cargo pockets at the nearest Army-Navy store. (Quonset in Portland, Ct.) -> Put full body heat pads in cargo pockets.
Wool has a tight weave -> Will block out the wind -> And if it gets wet, will still keep you warm -> That's why mariner's have worn wool at sea for centuries!
An alternative to the wool pants would be (silk or thermal first) synthetic snow mobile bibs and coat or those synthetic outfits made for winter.
AGAIN -> NOTHING MADE OF COTTOM -> NO COTTON UNDERWEAR -> NO COTTON BLUE JEANS -> NO COTTON COVERALLS -> NO COTTON SOCKS -> NOTHING HAVING COTTON IN IT
NEXT and MOST IMPORTANT -> Is to have dry warm feet -> Nothing worse then cold feet
1st goes on a thin pair of silk or synthetic socks, over which goes a pair of "all wool" socks.
Then put on a pair of insulated WATERPROOF boots (NO LEATHER! will get wet and/or freeze and conduct heat away!)
I have Muck brand neoprene Wetland boots that work Super!
If need be -> put a heat pack in each boot in the toes.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,

Right on, Sea Dog. Cotton is the death rag. I have been very well served in recent years with Under Armor's cold weather gear. In fact, I've been too hot with it at times. It's good stuff. |

Hi Phil!
Now that you brought the subject up!
Yes! The NFL, ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE, COAST GUARD and MARINE CORP did a scientific study that found that panty hose will keep you warm because it traps a layer of air within its mesh against the skin.
NFL still uses them and it works very well!
