Water temp: 82-85
Clarity: Pretty darn clear in most areas. 4-7 feet visibility
Time: 1:45 - 7:30PM
Hit Highland with Phil (PECo). It was our first time fishing together and Phil's first time to Highland. Tough fishing. We couldn't really figure them out. We threw at docks, a creek channel, weed lines, rocks and wood. Were were everywhere from 15 FOW to very shallow. We ended up catching a few fish, but nothing of any real size. Phil did get his first smallie ever, which was nice, and I caught a rock bass that looked like a hybrid with another fish because it had pronounced leopard spotting. Phil got a nice looking sunny and I got a calico. I got 2 1.5 lb LMB. First one came on a 3:16 Lures 6" soft plastic sunfish in 15 FOW about 10 feet off the end of a dock. 17lb flouro, 8' Diawa Zillion swimbait rod with Zillion reel. 2nd LMB came hours later in 11 FOW by slowly retrieving a gold/black lipless crank and ticking it off the grass. Shimano rod, Diawa Aggrest reel. Super slow retrieve. Got the calico, and the rock fish the same way in the same area. Trip was shortened by thunder and ominous looking weather map. It was a very pretty evening and as always, it was great to be on the water. Thanks for joining me, Phil!!! |

highland is a tough lake. I did a night tourney there and the bags were pretty lousy. I think 13 and change won it for 5 fish. _________________ Sorry honey, looks like we will be late again due to motor problems.

Nice job on getting Phil into his first smallmouth, Jed! Tough lake for sure, but it does hold some big fish. |

How's the knee Jed?
If Phil hasn't caught a smallie then he hasn't been to rainbow res.
I have nothing else to add...never been to Highland so can't comment on how effortlessly I'd be slaying them there. _________________ Kira

Phish was kind enough to take me fishing on his boat. Unfortunately, the heat and sun of the day were apparently better suited to waterskiing, wakeboarding and waketubing than fishing. Several of the locals told us that the fishing has been unusually slow this year. However, it's still true that any day out on the water in a boat is a good day.
After a very slow start, it seemed like we were on a mission to catch all of the fish in the Angler's Guide. It took a while, but Jed finally caught this largemouth bass:
I finally caught a sunnie and a tiny little smallmouth bass, and then Jed caught a rock bass, his second largemouth bass and a calico bass.
Actually, though, that wasn't my first smallie. I caught one on my first cast ever into Rainbow Reservoir from the boat launch ramp. I also caught a bunch of little ones at West Hill Pond that liked to play dead after they were hooked. Necrophiliac fishing is not for me. I'd take a rock bass over one of those dead things any day.
Quite frankly, the slow fishing was my fault, because on the way to the lake, I discovered that I had left my lucky fishing cap at home. After a Winsted cop refused to sell me his cap, we stopped at a store where I had to choose between the Yankees and the Red Sox. Here's what I got:
I want you, chumley and steven1smith, to know that I wore it all day. Honestly though, I think I chose wisely; a couple of the locals tried their best to put us on some fish because they're Yankees fans. But it's still going in the closet until I lose a bet or the end of the world or something. . . . _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Phil, what are you doing up at 3am? How did you like fishing from a boat? |

Hey Johnny Damon - You PAID for that hat, then expected others to HELP you?
I would have insisted that you try casting into trees for the elusive giant tree bass.
I never trust "locals." They're not going to tell you where the fish are. Whatever they say, do the opposite...fish right next to them the whole time. They love that. _________________ Kira

Didn't they have a Mets hat or some other neutral team that sucks?
Phil, I hope your lucky hat forgives you. _________________ Kira

Kira - They had exactly three hats: the Red Sox, a light blue Yankees and the one I got. And, yeah, it crossed my mind that those "helpful" locals might have been Red Sox fans; their advice didn't exactly get us a ton of fish!
chumley - Yeah, but can you fly down Winchester Lake at 45 mph? I don't think so. . . . _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Kira - I should have taken a photo of the rock bass that Jed caught. It had a leopard spot pattern on it that looked remarkably like the pattern on that largemouth bass you caught at Batterson Park Pond earlier this year.
Derek - I couldn't sleep last night. I ended up cleaning the kitchen and doing laundry. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!
