Hi All!

Well I've been monitoring Hurricane Irene's forward progress very closely.
Also called my friend Jack at the National Wx Center for his perspective.

Here's what we both concluded Exclamation

What we have here is a similar synopsis as what occured in 1938.
High pressure to the west over the eastern mid-west and the Bermuda High pressure, with a trough between the 2.
This is almost the exact same situation that happened in 1938.
The Big Question is? -> Will Irene pick up forward speed as did the 1938 (50 mph) hurricane once it passes Cape Hatteras and shoot up thru the trough between the 2 high pressures.

If this occurs -> then Long Island and New England will be hit hard.
1938 hurricane came ashore at cat. 3 (over 500 dead)
It also hit at high tide, which is also when Irene will arrive here.
Irene cat. is still unknown till it passes Hatteras.

Again -> I want to emphasize that "No One" should take this storm lightly or with any humor ! -> "Especially when lives are at stake!"
Irene's hurricane winds extend out to 90 miles and heavy rain is also expected.

Be Prepared -> Expect the Worse -> Hope for the best Exclamation

Well, I live in a beachside condo which has never been flooded in it's forty year history, but this storm has me nervous. A new moon super high tide just as the storm is peaking at 11AM, with winds from the east which will keep alot of extra water in the sound.
I plan on staying overnite, but will be up early to check the storm surge from low tide on, and be ready to make a quick exit if things get dicey.

what a joke! i can fart winds faster then what we got here in northern CT. Once again the great state of CT got everyone in a frenzy for nothing. Im starting to think they do this every "big storm" to raise some cash for the state. Everyone runs out and buys every house hold item they need "just in case" because the news tells them to. It was a frenzy at the grocery store yesterday when we out doing our usual saturday grocery shopping. We havent had cable or internet for three days due to us moving and didnt even know the storm was coming. Should have left the tv off.

Well Im sure lots of other people dont feel the same way you do hoppy. My parents are without power since 6 am this morning and Ill be spending lots of time over there cleaning up over there. I myself didnt have much but a lot of rain which is flooding lots of roads and homes by my house. I spent 3 1/2 hours cleaning the yard with all the branches and leaves but never lost power. I was kind of hoping to loose power as I really need to run the gas out of my generator, its been in there quite some time now! I bought that generator when we had that big power grid problem in like 2002 or around there and had it wired into the whole house so all in all I spent right around $2,800 and havent needed it since then!!

Well we got somewhat lucky Exclamation

Lots of serious flooding, downed trees and power lines, inland homes and shore line homes flooded and heavily damaged!
And further flooding still possible!

The good thing is -> People listened to the authorities and did what they were told and got prepared for the worse Exclamation

-> You have a very sorry A$$ attitude when danger is emenent and I would never ever want to count on you to watch my back or anyone elses in any pending serious situation! Evil or Very Mad

Any predictions on when the sound will be fish-able also meaning the fish will be there as I presume lots went out to sea?

Hi ff!

Well it's going to take a couple of days for the waves and swells to subsid on the sound and ocean from this storm.
Plus it depends on what winds we get and from what direction.

Also, with all the run-off -> Many lakes, ponds and rivers will also need sometime for all the muddy silt to settle out.

Fishing will most likely be poor till things get back to a relatively normal state!
Happens all the time after a significant storm.

Stephen, the name-calling is uncalled for. Sheesh! Rolling Eyes

hoppy is right that Irene's impact was very localized. It was pretty much a non-event here in the Farmington River valley. The sky didn't fall and there was no wolf.

In Avon, we had sustained rain and higher than average winds for a long period, but nothing more intense than we've seen over the last six years that I've been here. I know that Bristol had some pretty severe river flooding, but the Farmington River in Unionville already crested yesterday and dropped back below flood stage today:

maybe in northen CT, you didnt get much of a hurricane or anything at all...But on the shore, some people lost everything....its not a joking matter...some neighborhoods got devestated and some got lucky.... I spent a lot of lastnight helping cut and remove trees from houses and yards, and when i get out of work today I will rejoin my friends and family here in Milford in salvaging what they can...

What I did say was that Hoppy has a very sorry A$$ atitude toward taking advice to protect life and property and quite obviously reflects lack of concern for the safety of his fellow human beings.
Now you come along and say just about the same-> Sheeesh! Rolling Eyes

Your and Hoppy's mere metion that this was a non-event is deplorable, disgusting and total "BS" Exclamation

Your borderline Mr. Barrister -> Very borderline!

Anyone that doesn't heed good sound advice to protect life and property when emenent danger approaches -> Is either a Fool or vying for a "Darwin Award!"

Sure we mostly got lucky here in Ct. north of Rt. 84.
But those south of 84 and along the shoreline caught Hell Exclamation

So Phil -> Tell me how you feel towards your fellow human beings that lost most or all they had due to this storm Question

And all the thousands that may be without power for days?
If the storm had been stronger -> You, I, and our loved ones could have been in serious peril!
No ifs ands or buts --->"The Wolf came very close -> very close" Exclamation

Me! -> "I CARE" about my fellow man, and that's why I posted warnings (as a professional certified meteorologist) as Irene approached Ct.

I never took a ship or crew to sea without having every possible piece of safety equipment, medical supplies, spare parts, etc. etc. on board.
I was taught to always expect the worse case scenario and work down from that!

I am flabagasted and truly dissapointed in your post Phil!
Not what a well learned professional in your field I would expect from!

Me! -> I tell it up front and as it really is with No Apology or Regret!

There is absolutely no acceptance for any small minded wishy-washy atitudes when lives and property are at stake Exclamation

I live in Manchester, we lost power at 1130 am yesterday and got it back today at 330pm.... very thankful that that was that I had to deal with. I worked last night, I work in enfield, and we were slammed with people who didn't have power from the enfield/somers/east windsor/suffield and windsor locks<-- where my mom lives..

But yea, down south, the shore area.... man, I hope everyone is ok down there.
The only thing I forgot really was a radio! Doh! I brought my freezer and refridgerater stuff to my work (helps working at a restaurant) so I didn't lose any food!

My wife and the boys cooked on the grill last night, storm had already long passed manchester and for lunch we cooked on the grill again today!
