Went back out to the sandbar at Remington Wednesday. Low tide was scheduled for 3:54pm. Winds were steady 10mph from the south and southwest. Arrived around 2:30pm.
Played with a number of Rapalas and soft plastics but never had a hit. Decided to switch over to a 3/4 ounce Hurricane jighead to snag bunker. Bunker weren't as thick as they were Tuesday.
First bunker I snagged I let stay out there. Pretty soon, fish on! I was fighting this bluefish with a 7'6" Okuma SST Salmon Spin medium power rod and Penn Sargus 4000 with 10 pound Sufix Tritanium mono. Made sure I already had the drag set. This fish took about 6 long runs. Finally get it to shore after a good battle.
New personal best bluefish from the surf! First time doing live bunker on my own.
For the rest of the evening I only snagged 2 more bunker. One of them got chopped and the other had a fish on before losing the fish.
Things became very quiet by 5:30pm and hit the road around 7pm.
Didn't have a scale or measuring tape with me, but took a 4" Rapala to measure the fish. Ended up being 36 inches. Had a fisherman lift it to feel the weight and he said about 12 pounds.
Beats my older 30" 10 pound gator caught 3 years ago at Penfield Reef. |

Nice bluefish! Similar shape to a 9lb I got the other night, long and skinny. These things are gonna be beasts when they fatten up.
A good alternate title for this thread could be Rapala vs. Bunker |

Come to think of it, I landed that 32" 12 pound 12 ounce striper on the same reel and mono line but a medium heavy power freshwater rod.
The striper took 1 long run before easily working it in. This bluefish took 6 runs and wouldn't stop battling. I had to put some extra pressure on the bluefish to get it in while it was still energetic. |

Lb. for lb., blues fight way harder. As you said, stripers are usually 2 good runs and done. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

I noticed you have him on a stringer. You eat them when they are that big? When they are smaller they are good or should I say OK but when they get that big they are truly nasty! They just taste like Bunker! _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

Wade, have you eaten bunker?!? I agree, large bluefish aren't very good to eat, but that's just my opinion. Some people like them! |

Big blues are fine as long as you cook them right. I bleed all my fish while they are alive and then with blues we mostly deep fry 2inch squares like some KFC. Also smoking them is good no matter the size. If you do something plain with them like just frying then yes smaller are better but big ones still taste good. FYI, this is coming from someone who ate canned mackerel as a child and my favorite part was the lateral line and belly! |
