Friday afternoon I headed down to Fayerweather Island, arriving around 4:15. Low tide for Black Rock was scheduled for 1:30. Forecast was calling for steady 8 to 12 southwest winds before diminishing to light and variable later in the evening. Skies were supposed to stay mostly cloudy but became mostly sunny later.
I moved around in the same area I was hitting the blues and schoolies at last time but wasn't into much action this time. Still landed a 4 pound tailor and 3 schoolies. Lost 1 fish and had only 4 other swirls. Biggest schoolie was a chunky strong 23"er.
Once winds had diminished, mosquitoes and gnats were eating me. I wasn't into a bite anymore so I headed back to shore and fished the western tip of the beach.
First cast out in the outgoing tide and get 2 explosions followed by a hook set. As the evening went on, I kept getting swirls, explosions, and hook sets with the SSP-12 until there was hardly any sunlight left. Total was 8 snarbor blues. The bigger 2 pounders were really pulling on my 14 pound braid and 8 footer. They were also jumping and skipping a lot.
Hit the road around 9:30 |
