Beautiful April like day on February 1st so I rode my bike to a small pond called Frog Pond.

Hit all of my usual areas there for about 2 1/2 hours while sticking with a size 7 firetiger Rapala Original Floater.

Caught 4 largemouths while sticking with a slow retrieve with the rod tip down. Biggest of the day was a chubby 16 1/2" solid 3 pounder.

Well that's just awesome, slow retrieve in cold water is the way to go. Have you tried a suspending type jerkbait? I've good luck with a jointed shad rap in really cold weather.

Rapala Husky Jerks and X-Raps are more of an ice out lure for me at this pond Hila. This small pond is too shallow for a Jointed Shad Rap. No deeper than 1 tiny 5 foot hole.

Hey guys, quick question if I may...

Do you guys think that a small jig might be as effective as a jerkbait in this months cold waters? I ask because I still have little experience or confidence with jerkbaits, but have been doing VERY well with jigs up into november. Also, what do you think of brown,red or orange crank baits this time of year?

I have read they feed primarily on crayfish this time of year and that those colors should be hot...

Bass and other fish hanging out on the bottom of open water lakes and ponds would be interested in a small jig or soft plastic this time of the year PH.

A grub, worm, tube, or crayfish no bigger than 4" would be good. Colors this time of the year would be browns, pumpkins, oranges, white, smoke, and silver.

Bottom lures I like to play with this time of the year in small shallow ponds include 1/16oz & 1/8oz maribu jigs, 1 1/2" crayfish, 2" grubs, and 2" tubes. A small lifelike worm would come in handy too.

Hi Pondhopper, jerkbaits shine in cold water, you can cover lots of water, little tricks to your jerkbait, weighting the front or rear of the bait so it has a very slow nose forward or rear sinking action can make a huge difference,, now if your fishing a nice point with rocks, I would throw a jerkbait and a small jig, fish will come up for a jerkbait, its easy prey, pick up a couple husky jerks, black and silver, and gold and black, #8 or 10,, throw your lure out, and cadence it back to you,, change up and start slow, colder water means slower candence, usually,, also try a rattletrap and burn it,,fish can get pretty aggresive,, good luck,, Jim

Bringing this back from the dead. I moved to trumbull a few years ago, is frog pond public? Are there any known restrictions, ice fishing for example?
