Had Monday off so I headed out to Mondo arriving just before 4pm. The main pond had more open water vs last time, but only about 1/3 of the pond was open. The smaller pond had a small area of open water.
I started off at the small area of open water at the smaller pond with the legendary helsinki shad HJ-6. First cast and landed a 16" 1 pound 3 pound pickerel.
Once I had landed that pickerel, it became one of those "first cast only fish" days. Covered a number of spots and also tried throwing a few spinners, purple nurple XRSH-6, and weightless 2" Strike King Lightning Shad but niente.
Hit the road just before 6:30.
Was happy to see more ice was gone and caught a fish. Was surprised to not have a crappie or yellow hit the HJ-6 or Strike King.

I stopped by yesterday to check out the ice melting progress. Didn't see you there. Did see a bike up against a tree though? Yours?
Definitely a good deal of melting going on. Next week's weather looks promising. |

Love the HJ-6, jerk baits are my go to lures for cold water situations. |

That was me.
Supposed to get cold again this week which will cause ice to form again. |

Forgot to mention about sounds of spring while I was there.
Black capped chickadees were very noisy. Heard the first red-winged blackbird of the year. Flock of common grackles were being noisy.
Those 3 birds are year round residents, but don't become more noisy and verbal until spring and warmer temps get closer.
Plus, when I went to Mondo last week, I didn't hear a single blackbird or grackle. |

I was there Thursday after work, did I spot you?
2nd pond was almost completely frozen (15 foot spot open).
Skunked |
