I saw Bunnell's Pond as I drove past it on Route 8. It's completely frozen and covered with snow. There was a flock of seagulls clustered together and standing in the center on the snow.
There's no need to go check it out, Michael; not a single swirl was spotted.

Is it posted "No ice fishing"? I saw no signs of any fishing activity on the ice.

Bunnells Pond is closed to fishing from December 1 til Opening Day. The Bunnells Pond/Pequonnock River line is the narrow area near a cluster of trees before opening up again. From there north it is open to fishing til last day of February. |

Bunnell's Pond has a long history of drownings.
Back in the 1960s and earlier, there used to be a beach area and more water where the Route 25/8 Connector now is. There were buoys and a rope reminding swimmers how far out they can go, but many would venture too far and get swept over the dam or drown due to the underwater current from the Pequonnock River.
Many cars have gone into the water there too.
About 15 to 20 years ago the city drained Bunnell's Pond for some reason, and people were amazed at what was actually found lying at the bottom, from cars to furniture to body remains and more. |
