My sister told me and my dad we need a new hobby so she got us some tip ups for Christmas. We are both new to ice fishing so looking for any tips and places to go, I know no-one is going to give up there hot spot but just looking for places near the montville area where we could go have a good time drink some beer and catch a couple fish hopefully. Any info well be much appreciated.

Can look in the ct angler's guide for lakes and ponds in your area or look at google earth and then research the ponds you discover. i don't know your area so i have no suggestions.

NOT Wethersfield Cove. Not NOW, at least.

It is a great sport, hopefully you and your dad will love it.

Did you guys get any safety gear with your tip ups? Picks? A rope? Spud bar? Cleats?

Early and late ice can be a challenge if you are inexperienced, actually even if you ARE experienced. Don't take chances and drill or spud as you go if unsure of the thickness, Places like Wethersfield Cove are tidal and the ice does not freeze uniformly so stay away from the channel to the right, at least for now. I'm too old and never go near that area anyway. Try to hook up with someone that know the body of water or that has groups already on it. I'm sure there are guys here that you can get together with.

Have a great time!

Not sure where you are in state. But Ct outfitters is the place to go for info (and to spend money ). Also if you go to the DEEP website they have classes/events. I know there is one coming up on Burr pond.
