I caught this catfish while drop-shotting the lower Mattabesset River, yesterday, just before the mouth of the river:

It's a white catfish, right? It has the same forked tail as a channel catfish, but has no spots on its body. And, no, I don't want to count the number of rays on its anal fin. Wink

Nope, Pete, the bite was slow. DirtyDawg10 (aka Derek) and I fished the outgoing tide to dead low on the lower part of the river, below the Coginchaug River. Spinnerbaits got nothing. I caught a couple of short smallmouth bass and a decent largemouth bass with a wacky-rigged Black with Large Blue Flake five inch Senko, but all of the fish picked it up very gently off of the bottom. The drop shot Gulp! Minnow also got me a rock bass. Rolling Eyes

I am almost certain that is a white cat. I have only fished for cat's a few times but I think the faint line down the side, rounded but moderately forked tail, and sometimes noticeable flat belly differentiate whites from channels...as well as some other characteristics.
Nice size for a white too...most of the ones I caught were 8"- 10" or so. I don't think they get nearly as big as a channel can.

Damn! You made me do anal. . . fin ray counting. Laughing
Quote:
The simplest way to identify the white catfish is to count the rays in the anal fin. The white catfish has 19-23 rays and the fin is rounded along the bottom edge while the channel catfish has 24-30 rays and a rounded anal fin. The blue catfish has 30-36 rays and a longer and much straighter edged anal fin.

It had only 19 or 20 rays in its anal fin, so it was a white catfish. Cool
