Low tide for Black Rock was scheduled for 6:55pm Saturday and arrived at Breezy Point around 2:30pm. Nobody was chumming or casting. Winds were a 5 to 10 mph southerly flow.
Tried playing with the FLR-10, XRW-9, XRW-11, and SSP-9 but never got any hits, swirls, or explosions. One issues by the cannon was lots of branches and other weeds floating.
Later I headed over to the ramp to see what the bunker were doing. Tried casting but nada. Bunker then started getting active on the surface but an issue was boat traffic pushing them deep often. Only felt 1 bump while trying to snag.
Once it was almost 5pm I headed over to the honey hole. Tide was still going out but was able to wade out onto the flats. Threw the FLR-10, XRW-11, SSP-9, and LC-12 for a while but nada.
Checked to see what time it was after casting for a while and saw it was almost 6:30pm which meant low tide getting closer. Took a break for about 15 minutes and then started casting again. Not too long after dead low things turned on. Would sometimes see a few swirls here and there with smaller bait jumping by those swirls. Played pencil popper with the XRW-11 and had just the rear teaser hook on the lure. Pretty soon I get an explosion and land an 18" schoolie. The bite kept going throughout the evening.
Once the tide had gotten too high to be staying out there I headed over to the rocky area next to the destroyed pier. Never got into anything there so I hit the road seeing police were closing the park.
Total was 8 schoolies from 18" to 24" and 2 snarbor blues. Had tons of explosions and many swirls. All fish took the rear teaser tail. Most schoolies were 21" to 24", which were the ones that fought and would swim all over the place. Had 1 huge explosion right in front of me when I went to reel in the lure fast after nothing happening farther out. That's when I decided to give it 5 casts with a faster pace, which resulted in 2 casts showing monster swirls.
All bellies on the stripers were very chubby as if they were feasting on small bait.
Conditions were perfect for the evening bite I had. Low tide was 6:55pm, sunset was 8:30pm, winds were 5 to 10 mph southerly, and moon was new.
This was also the first time I ever had such a good bite going while pencil popping. I was never into pencil popping until this year I found the X-Rap Walk could be used as one. |
