Went out this morning with my buddy on his boat. I usually do freshwater so figured it would be fun to switch it up a bit. We left from Westbrook about 10:30 and were trying to catch Fluke using squid. Tried a few different spots and caught mostly sea-bass, I got one that was a pretty decent size with great blue colorings.

My other friends caught a few sea-bass and sea-robins which we tossed back. My friend caught a nice dogfish about 3.5' long that just mangled his hook and was a pain to get off, but I was interested in seeing different types of fish that I don't usually see.

Tried a few other spots around 6 mile reef and drifted across a few times, getting a few more sea-bass. I finally hooked a fluke but it was too tiny to keep. All in all not a bad day on the water, seems like saltwater fishing is much easier in terms of how often you catch the fish. I'm used to freshwater and can go days without a nibble but today I was getting hits quite often.

I'm heading to Nantucket on Saturday for the week and will be trying my luck at surfcasting on the south shore there so this was a nice warm-up for saltwater. Let's hope I have some luck out there Very Happy

Rolling Eyes Saltwater is no easier than freshwater. Having a good captain and a lucky day will get you on the fish. You can still go for days getting skunked, no matter if you can drink the water, or if you can't... Also, you're sadly mistaken if you think bottom fishing is comparable to surf casting.

But good luck to ya! Being on Nantucket, fishing or not, I'm jealous!

I remember back in the 70's and 80's filling the boat with porgies, blackfish, flounder, bluefish. But that was a long time ago. We always caught a lot more at the ocean than in a lake but it's all still better than your best day at work! I don't ever remember getting skunked in the ocean, but we did from time to time at the lake.
