No bass landed today. Started around 8am and fished until 1pm. We boated a nice white perch and 1 tiny yellow perch on a rattlebait. Tried senkos, rattles, frogs, swimbaits and spinnerbaits. The Western side has dense weeds. Some carp were hitting the surface a bit. Met a nice guy at the launch that gave my kid a few plastic grubs. Nice weather but no bass at all. |

The Largemouth spawn is finishing up in Batterson, while the Bluegill spawn is still well underway. Concentrate on fishing areas near or around large Bluegill spawning colonies (bed clusters). The biggest of bass can often be found staging in deeper water that offers quick "in & out" access to these Bluegill colonies. Use a Bluegill imitation bait, like a Jackall Giron or a Coppers live target minnow and you should do pretty well in these particular areas. Topwaters can also pay big dividends at this time, even in midday bright sun. The postspawn can be a difficult time to pattern largemouth, the males are just beginning their schooling activities while the lazy much larger females will often stick around in the shallows preying on the unsuspecting spawning Bluegills for a quick easy meal. This tactic has worked very well for me for the past 38 years. Not long after the Bluegill spawn is over, those big females will usually seek out nearby cover (if available) that offers both shallow and deep water access and plenty of shade & forage. Some will head to strictly deep water and only venture shallow to feed during periods of low light and inclimate weather. Many bassers get discouraged this time of year due to the lack of predictability or establishing a pattern but we must adapt in order to keep our rods bent and a smile on our face! |
