The day just didnt start off good after trying to get out there before 7am but the gas stations sure prevented that from happening. hit up the diamond fuels on ferry blvd lights on pumps lit up door locked. put in card and pump doesnt go on. ugh. go to stop and shop not open till 7. go get bait at harborview and back to diamond all these people there no one able to pump. dude turn off your lights and pumps if your not open!! check sunoco on ferry blvd closed. had to go over devon bridge and pay more at the shell. finally get to ramp. after 7.
gorgous day out there sunny no wind flat calm. of course the usual nothing going on in the river. decided to head to bridgeport see what was going on. went to bpt harbor. dead.
over to black rock. pods of bunker at the mouth all small ones though. went further in and splashes all over. snagged up some. of course nothing under them. after turning on the livewell for 10 min or so everything died. no livewell, no washdown, no sonar/gps. only anchor since that was on different battery. nothing worked to fix so we were screwed. decided to do some t&w and picked up 2 schoolies but there didnt seem to be many just one area and not hot and heavy so we decided to head out to penfield area. bunker pods all over the place but nothing under them. only picked up a sea robin at penfield. still thinking about electrical issue, we had this problem before and it was this gray thing on one of the wires. like a circut breaker. we decided to cut it off and just splice the wires directly. bingo. that worked. thank god.
headed off to the buoy 18 area. again loads of bunker pods all over but no fish. never usually see bait way out there. wtf is going on. everyone talking about finding loads of blues/stripers on all the bait. nada zip zilch. nothign on the chunks either. moved to a few other spots, no bait around and also no fish on bottom.
it was already early afternoon and we had to leave by 3, so hit up 20 for fluke or run to milford to try deep and our spot from last weekend? decided on the milford and of course nothing out there deep. extremely disappointed especially since everyone talking about how hot is it out there right now and chris from harborview posting on fb to get out there and telling us they nailed them the night before on just going out to 50ft deep no hump or wreck or anything. where were all the fish yesterday? anyone have a good day?
so gave up on that and went to try our spot form last weekend where we got some nice porgys and seabass. basically dead there just one porgy. move closer to charles to try porgys and nada. had to head back on a very disappointing day but wanted to try one more spot deeper off charles. finally some sign of life there. i got a keeper size seabass (threw back of course).
then my brother gets something he says its pretty big and taking out drag. get it up and surprise its a keeper blackfish. and this is on light tackle (medium action spinning rods) we were shocked at that one. havent gotten blacks in that area in decades not to mention a keeper!
a few min later he has another fish on and its a big one. wow another blackfish this one just about 4lbs!
of course all fish were released since its out of season.
unfortunately after that it was really late so we had to head in. just when we finally got into some fish. a nice suprise with those blackfish to salvage the day but pretty darn disappointing on everything else and unreal all the bait out there and no fish on them. |

Mind sharing what you got the surprise Blackfish on?
Sounds like a tough day for sure, but without days like that, it's a lot harder to appreciate it when you're really on 'em!
I too am baffled at the massive amounts of bait without any fish underneath them. Just gotta keep the lines wet and hope the fish figure out all the free meals to be had up this way... |

Chris was out fishing at dusk. That's why they did well. Middle of the day is tough , but some guys still manage to get some fish.
You have have better success getting on the water before sunup or just before sundown. _________________ Trust me. Use waxworms ! |
