Jeff_Treebass and I fished Mattabassett for 6 hours in the kayaks yesterday. The weather was pretty spot on after those morning showers rolled through. I've never seen so many kayaks, canoes and boats on the 'bassett! We managed to dodge the crowds and get into some nooks off the main river. The lunker of the day was a 16.5" / 3.9 lb LMB which I got about an hour into the day...and we had no other action until late afternoon. The Carp were out of control in the shallows, I had 3-4 literally ram into my yak, a few the size of small dogs! All in all a fun day on the water.

Avec,
Damn nice looking catches!
Where did you launch from?
I have never been on the Mattbassett but am itching to go very soon.
Is the river wide enough to anchor your kayak for good positioning?
I use a 1.5 lb weight that works great as an anchor for my yak, but would hate to take it on the Mattabassett if I couldn't use it there.
thanks, |

Thanks. We launch beside Dunkin Donuts in Cromwell (24 Shunpike Rd, Cromwell, CT). There is dirt parking lot and a small trap rock, carry-in launch there. I'm not sure whether the state or town manages it, but it's in good shape right now. The river width varies and typically the drift isn't bad. I've never anchored, but you'll have no problem doing so if that's your preference. Bring plenty of bug spray and sun block! Below is an image of the parking area...

Avec,
that is awesome info.
Let me know if you want a third wheel to join you at the Mattabassett.
I would be happy to meet you up there for some yak fishing. |

are there sand flats that the carp are usually on in the river? also is the launch doable in an inflatable pontoon? |
