High tide for Black Rock was scheduled for 4:52pm Tuesday and hit the boat ramp just after 2pm. When I got there, all I kept on thinking and saying was, "oh this wind MADONE!!!!!!!". Gusty north and northwest winds once again so I didn't stay at the ramp for too long. Ran low on 10 pound braid with my Fierce 2000 due to the big birds nest I got thanks to a clump of seaweed so I had a Pursuit II 4000 with 30 pound braid.
Next I went over to the Fayerweather jetty where I ran into one of the usuals who was with his daughter on the beach. As I was talking to him terns came in and started working the water. Wasn't seeing any splashes or swirls but tried casting with the SP-9 and getting out farther with and XRW-11 but nada.
Next stop as the tide was getting right near peek high was Breezy Point. One guy I've been seeing there had just gotten there and stayed for no more than 45 minutes. He wasn't getting a single hit, swirl, or explosion but had a school of small schoolies follow 1 certain plug twice. The only action I got was a quick bam bam with a tennessee olive shad CNM-9. The stripers seemed to be deeper in the rocks this time.
Once it was an hour after high tide I headed back over to the ramp seeing winds were dying. By the time I had gotten there winds shifted to a light south wind and clouds were moving in. Those conditions to go with outgoing tide, last hour of light, and very comfy air temps had me hoping there would be a good bite turning on soon. Nothing ever happened.
Checked out 2 certain areas out on the Fayerweather jetty that I was killing the schoolies at last fall but nada. Also tried casting straight into Black Rock Harbor from Fayerweather Island but nada.
Last stop was the ramp to see who was there and if anything was going on. The 2 buddies I see a lot and the newbie I met about a week ago were there but all getting no action at all and not seeing a single splash or swirl.
One other report I got was the 2 buddies went to Remington in the later afternoon and said nobody was catching anything and getting no hits. There wasn't much of a crowd there anyways.
What I've been very surprised about around Fayerweather and Black Rock Harbor is lack of bird action, such as loons, mergansers, egrets, and cormorants. Haven't even seen a single black crowned night heron on the rocks just after sunset. Today the brant were gathering in larger flocks as if they're getting ready to head north, which is where they should be this time of year. |
