Just got back from the first successful trip of the season. Started fishing round 7 and a buddy and I were throwing large spooks and shallow swimmers. Right before dark my friend hooked to a pretty decent pickeral on a jointed bomber. The next hour or so as it got dark didn't produce any fish or strikes so we moved around a lil bit to try a new area... Right about when it got completely dark is when I hooked up to my first fish of the year (couldn't make any winter trips) and she came out to 31" 12lbs.

I was fishing a small area south of Hartford on the river and the fish was caught on a 10" black tandem rigged hogy reeled nice and slow without giving it any movement.

This is just the beginning... there was some bait around but not many, my friend foul hooked an alewife even though they weren't mating and rolling around on top. I know other rivers were producing all winter but the CT is just getting started. Could of been a fresh fish or a holdover... not able to say just what.

I got a pic but forgot how to post. I think most of the people on here knows what a 31" striper looks like anyways... lol.

Congrats,...I am pretty sure that it's a holdover since no one is seeing much action yet on the Lower river. Things are definitely behind schedule as far as the stripers go,..last year was way early and I guess we are just averaging out with this year being way late!

I know of people getting them pretty consistantly north of Hartford already. They might not all be here but that first wave seems to be on its way up. Mid may seems to be the average prime time in Hartford area though.

Are they seeing any size?? If it's mostly schoolies with just the occasional keeper, then I would guess that they are still just holdovers. (Not saying that holdovers aren't still fun to catch,..just talking about the migration..).

stripers are moving in from the sea and not all of them are holdovers and the reason i know this is because i caught a 25 in striper in new haven harbor a week ago with sea lice on it.
