You can never go wrong with bait, chunking with bunker works good, I am assuming you are gonna fish for stripers, if that is the case cut the head off a bunker and throw it on the hook, you wont regret that decision. |

As far as throwing lures goes swim baits will typically do better but there is nothing better then hooking up with top water!!!! It really depends on what time of day though and water conditions. Right at Dawn and Dusk is a great time to throw top water or when the current is dead and its late at night a top water Spook works great! _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

Swimbaits give you a better chance of hooking up into a striper. Topwater is very exciting! As FF said, dusk and dawn is the time for topwater, unless it's a mild overcast afternoon in May or June and waters are calm enough.
One thing to keep in mind is length of the lure. Sometimes schoolies are the only ones around with a slight chance of getting into something big. That's when a lure around 4" comes into play. But when the big girls are lurking, lures 5 to 9 inches are the hit. |

All always have a variety of swimbaits, poppers, metal lips, etc. in my surf bag. Don't go armed just with one type of lure! Off the jetties where you have some surf or a good current, jigs (sometimes on a casting egg) work great as well. If you're fishing an easy access location, take a rod to soak some bait as well. As for locations, the state beaches and public access points from Hammonassette east to Harkness all provide shots at big bass. Depending on tides, I'll start in the east or west and work numerous locations. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

I've had luck in Old Saybrook with big bunker chunks. Throw on a 3 or 4 ounce weight and whip it out there. Sandworms also work but I never get any big fish with those. |
