Quick trip on the incoming, nothing so far, just wanted to see if they were around. It is still a bit early, but those things are so unpredictable... |

So, the herring run with the stripers? Since I started fishing for stripers in the last two years, the only other fish I've boated have been a couple of white perch. How do you fish for herring? What do you throw? _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!

To fish for Sea Herring all you need is a Sabiki rig. Just attach one of those ball weights to the bottom (I usually use 1/2 ounce depending on the current) and just cast and jig it in. If there's a strong current where you're fishing you don't even have to do much reeling, just cast the rig out and the only retrieving you'll do with a sabiki in a strong current would just to keep tension on the line, the current will do most of the work. |

Thanks. I'll try throwing a sabiki rig the next time I get out there. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

I gotta find my sabiki rigs! You know, the ones I've bought over the years but never used? _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Atlantic Herring are usually in intercoastal zones, harbors, and rivers during December to February - there's never any set time they appear. They show up in large schools and vanish just as quick as they come. When the fishing is hot, it's hot!
As someone else mentioned, sabiki rigs with a weight on the bottom work best. Simply jig the rig up and down so that teaser paper flashes. The herring are drawn to the action and hook themselves. If you leave one on the line, sometimes it's fight will attract more and you can fill up t he whole rig with fish.
I fished last week at South Benson, it was very slow. A guy I talked to said he's been fishing there all week (he was unemployed) and there were a few small bursts of activity but otherwise, it's generally slow. Who knows what will happen this weekend though, especially since we've had cold weather. |

anyone got an update on the herring action outside of norwalk???
i was at the maritime center today for an hour(low tide) and got NADA!
i really wasn't expecting much..there has been a huge dredger on the river for weeks now.
a few days after i made my post..they MOVED the dredger upriver.. to right between the piers.
the dredger is back downriver now...dredging seven days a week...but i think it might've killed a great herring spot for the year!
