Not advisable, especially this time of year. The winds build during the day and the forecasts are never accurate. You could have relatively calm conditions on the way out, and a wind change and 4-6 chop for a return trip. This time of year, guys I fish with in 25-30ft. CC's pick and choose their days to run across. We've taken poundings in my friends 27' Cobia coming back on what have been "good" days.

Montauk is great this time of year, if you've got the boat to make the run and the weather cooperates. All those fish clearing out of here and up around the Cape are running through Montauk. The fish are chasing bait, which is all on the move now. They won't hang in a location for long. The eastern sound is pretty cleared out. You may have better luck and be better equipped to fish further west towards NY, targeting the fish moving back towards the Hudson. November brings some really good November runs in NY, though I've never fished that way. I've heard that places in NY around Pelham, Sands Point, City Island etc., can really light up. Maybe someone will chime in with some info on that.

I agree, this time of the year, forget about it! That is a long journey, even in the best of conditions. Plus, Montauk really has not been "Montauk" this year. The south side of Long Island, whole other story. Place is on fire, large sand eels have infested the areas around Fire Island. My suggestion is to hop on a party boat (if you're inclined to) out of that general area. Diamond Jigging is producing fish to 30lbs and they are limiting out within the first two hours. Absolute insanity down there right now - who knows how long it will last. Wish I could get my butt down there but just not in the cards this fall.

Tight lines and good luck
