Just started fly fishing this past Spring and haven't had any notable luck nymphing until this morning. Had on a sulphur nymph with a strike indicator at the bottom of Pipeline pool (where it turns into riffle). Really wasn't expecting anything to happen but after two casts something hit and it felt like a barbell on the other end. Fought for probably 10 minutes and pulled in the Brown below. It was much more colorful than all the other Brown's I've caught and fought much harder. Maybe it was wild? I'm sure others have caught way bigger but I was pretty stoked.
I have a new found respect for nymphing.

NICE GOING!Beautiful colors and fat belly on that brown.
That may very well be one of the Survivor strain browns.
They are part of the Farmington river breeding program and noted for their fight and abilities to withstand warmer water. There are usually thread markers behind the eye.Either left or right and different colors for each different year they are released.

not as exciting as fishing up top, but the technicality and subtle takes make it interesting. the fact that the fish can see some of these tiny nymph patterns blows me away.
in my case, if i'm not snagging tree branches, it'll be logs under water. |
