Monday afternoon I headed out on a journey. First stop just before 2pm was the ice out pond. Saw bass jumping out of the water for dragonflies like crazy. Setup was a 5'6" Eagle Claw Powerlight/Penn Fierce 2000 Sufix 6 lb Pro Mix.
Started with a custom painted Cotton Cordell Crazy Shad. Had 1 hit before switching over to a pearl grey shiner X-Rap Popper XRP-7.
Made 2 laps around the pond with the XRP-7 and caught 4 largemouths and lost 2. All were in the 10 to 12" 1 pound range. Eventually got the Rapala snagged on a branch sticking out of the water.
Later I headed to the funeral home pond. Lure I played with there was the 1" Mister Twister Nymph. Landed a total of 4 bluegills, 3 bass, and 1 pumpkinseed. All bass were under 10". Bluegills were all males around 8". The seed was a monster 8" fish.
Last stop after grabbing a bite to eat was Twin Brooks Park.
Played with the Nymph for a while and caught 3 small bluegills and an aggressive 7" redbreast. The redbreast hit the lure on the surface like a slab crappie and fought like one of those 1 pounders at the ice out pond.
Towards sunset I headed over to the larger pond. A few crankbaits I threw in a deeper cove were silver shad Jointed Shad Rap JSR-4, helsinki shad Clackin Crank CNC-53, hot tiger Shallow Shad Rap SSR-5, and brown trout Flat Rap FLR-6. Tried playing topwater with the SSR-5 and tried doing a constant jerking retrieve with the FLR-6 but didn't get anything. Last lure was a chrome blue topwater prop bait. That's when the show started.
Hit 3 bass on it at the cove. All were smaller than 10". Hit a 1 1/2 pounder at another spot. Last stop I made came the fish of the day. Doing a steady retrieve near weeds. As I started to go over the weeds I see a fish come leaping out and then set the hook and the fight was on!
As I battled what I thought was either a pig largemouth or a 4 pound pickerel, I was praying to the fishing Gods that I won't get stuck in weeds and the 6 pound mono won't snap. After a 3 to 5 minute battle, I land it. 19" 6 pound 1 ounce largemouth!
Had people surrounding me and cars stopping to take pics.
After having it out of the water for a while for pics, weight, and measurement, got it back in and it swam away.
That's when I hit the road after sunset.
Here's 2 pics that came out differently as for presentation of the fish.
Today was the first time in many years I caught a pig out of Twin Brooks and caught a summer evening topwater pig. Best topwater bite I've had this year, which is telling me Tuesday's forecast is calling for a big soaker with a better chance for severe weather.
If that bass was 2 to 4 inches longer with the girth it had, I could see it hitting the 8 pound mark. |

VERY nice fish Michael. With all the work you've been putting in,I'm glad you were rewarded with that pig.I love it when they attack topwaters.Even better when they're a whopper. _________________ ...Randy...

Nice job Michael. That's a respectable fish from any water but even more so from an often over fished Twin Brooks. Solid proof they're in there! |
