I attempted live-lining porgy at the Eastern LIS reefs (Race, Sluiceway, Little Gull) with no luck. On Friday morning I stared by catching 10 porgy and kept them in the livewell. I fished the morning outgoing tide. Not even a hit. I did not see much of anything caught by anyone except for a few blues. Lots of small bait in the water, though. I'm switching my striper efforts to the evening. |

I had similar results yesterday. I'm not able to fish as much at night, and the days have been inconsistent. Waiting for the albies! From Long Sand east, the inner reefs were barren of even blues most of the am as the tide change took FOREVER! I found tons of bunker in the mouth of the CT, but only had a few ripped up by blues and no stripers. Didn't bother with bottom fishing. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

Good to hear that bunker are moving closer to shore again. Those linesiders should show up again soon.Last summer was a blast when the bunker were in the river.Snag and couldn't reel in fast enough before a blue grabbed them.I had a few slam the side of my yak because they were so focused on the bunker.Caught my limit of blues in about an hour an started throwing them back.I had the school to myself. All the other boaters just passed on by even though i was flagging them over.
Even snagged a blue in the tail by mistake.Talk about being a pain in the butt to bring in.Felt like a fighting boulder. _________________ ...Randy...

I'm hoping to see those bunker make their way back into the harbors and along the reefs and sandbars down my way. I haven't been seeing any peanuts or silversides this summer and just a few small sand eels here and there. |

They were all around the break walls and on the west side. Must have been a dozen boats dropping nets all over, but I had to snag. Still, there were a ton. I thought for sure I'd land a few somewhere along Long Sand, Hatchet's or Black Point. The tide finally crapped out, and took way too long to get going again. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

I'm surprised there wasn't anything at the shoal. You'd think there would be since there were bunker in the area.Or at least under them. When i ran into them it was just below the RR tracks.Should have pinned a note on one and dropped it off way out at the race."Hey knuckle heads my buddies slipped past you and are headed up the river!Catch us if you can!" _________________ ...Randy...

While there are fish to be caught, I really believe that rain in the beginning of June screwed us up in the LIS. The squid and bait were starting to come in, as well as stripers and blues. Then we get 4-6" of rain across the entire LIS watershed, and I believe a lot of the migratory fish just kept headed north up to Buzzards Bay and into Cape Cod Sound. They have been having a ridiculous season where you could run out blindfolded, drop a line and catch fish. I have not, since I've been fishing up here, been out so many times without seeing birds working big schools of bait and blues by August on all of the inshore reefs. Usually the striper fishing sucks during the day because the blues are all over everything. I wish I could take a midweek trip up with my boat, as the striper bite is still red hot. Oh well. Maybe the albies will show before too long. _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.

Do you fish for the Albies in Connecticut?I've yet to even try fishing for them.I hear people fish for them around the Millstone outflow.Anticipate where they are heading, cast and reel/strip like a SOB!I'd like to get one on a fly.I tied a few Anchovie patterns and am waiting . _________________ ...Randy...

I agree with you RNA
I was enjoying the bluefish action and caught that gator. The next day after having a good day with all the bunker in the harbor, it was DEAD. That day was the day before Bridgeport had 4 1/2 inches of rain.
Last month was the first time I never got into a single tailor in Black Rock Harbor. July is a common tailor blue month in Black Rock Harbor because of all the bunker that gets trapped in there.
Other than bluefish, fluke haven't been as thick as last year due to the lack of silversides. I was getting a number of 15" to 18" fluke at Seaside and Penfield last year while the silversides were around. I was even getting Penfield Reef keepers parallel to the Reef as they'd chase the silversides up and down.
Other than rain, another pattern I've noticed since May is gusty winds turning up the waves, causing the water to stay murky. Have hardly had any nice days where there's just a slight 5 to 10 mph breeze with hardly any gusts. |

The Blues are around Michael. I caught a few 2 weeks ago and a few the week before and all were very big! I belly snagged 1 and had a real fun time getting him in!!!! I must say that its been dead since though but hopefully now that the tide is about the same this weekend it will pick back up. _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

I fish for the albies between Niantic and Watch Hill. They will run up through Two Tree channel to Millstone. Season before last I spent an afternoon on the Rocky Neck side of Black Point with a massive school chasing bait in circles. I caught till my arms and hands got too sore. Best bet though is Watch Hill. "Anticipate" is the right word. On the weekends you will see 50 boats all running and gunning to schools, and then wondering why they disappear. I can't wait til albie season! _________________ RNA - It's in my blood.
