Whew!!!What a hot one today. I arrived at 5:30 and dropped my motor in and headed up the old river channel trolling a fire tiger scatter minnow.
It was beautiful this morning.
Without getting a single wack as i headed into the back section i decided to reel up and head into the cove on the Northeastern shore to see if i could find any pond shiners. After about an hour i managed 6 big shiners and tossed back about 4 sunfish.(all caught on corn kernels.)
I then headed straight out to the stumps in the far north end.
As i made my first cast i thought my shiner was too big for the bobber.
As soon as it hit the water it disappeared! I tightened the slack only to feel a HEAVY TUG.I saw it!! A Big bass.

Then as it came to the side of the kayak.Down it went, right into a tangle of roots.I felt it snag on them and could feel the fish still tugging..
After 15 min or so i worked the snag free by hand.A tired bass slipped back up through the roots and right into my net. 21.5 inches. and weighed 5.9 lbs on my scale
What a beautiful looking fish.

After working around the stumps with no more action i moved into the northwestern cove and found that this guy wanted my pond shiners as well I luckily had my long pliers and was able to unhook him.

It was now around 1:00 pm and HOT! I trolled back to the launch and picked up 2 small yellow perch.
Also saw 1 baby pike literally 3inches and as wide as a pencil.I thought...WOW that means they are breeding with little problems here.

I need to make a correction here.
After checking the accuracy of my digital scale with 3 different 5 lb weights.ALL READINGS were at 4.4 lbs. WHICH MEANS...
MY 21 inch 5.9 lb bass. Was more like 21 inches and 6.5 lbs!
That makes it a SECOND BEST. From the same place too.1 Was a 7.3 last summer in the back at night on a ...baby bass zara pup.

Golden pond shiners are large wild minnows.4-8 inches.
Black back,gold/yellow sides and orange pectoral fins.
live in the shallows along weed lines/ lilly pads.
Bass love them as well as pike.Surprisingly, i didn't hook into any.Not complaining. That's for sure.

Are those at most ct lakes, I think I recall seeing them in the list of baits for use in the guide, but never really known ppl to actually catch and use them.

Great job again.

Thanks.i was nervous when it was tangled in the stumps .
THANK YOU PATIENCE!

Yes they are the ones listed in the guide.More people than you would suspect, find them and use them for bait.An old timer tactic that still lives to this day!
You should try locating them if you ever go pike fishing(Bantam) is anothor good place for them.Only problems i have had are that even small bass try to eat them and end up mangling them to death.Even then, hook them through the nose, put a bobber about 6 feet up and slow troll a dead one.

Nice bass! Sounds like a nice day on Windy. Yep, hot it was. We were going to go, But my son didn't want to roast. Spent the day in the basement tinkering with our gear instead(coolest place in the house). He's gonna regret not going once he see your chunk!

Pike candy. Do you use a bait trap? The bigger the shiners the better! Very Happy

I don't have a bait trap. I catch them one at a time.
Size 10,12,14 hook. A piece of corn or worm and the tiniest bobber i can find to give it some casting weight and keep it above the weeds.

The ones i used were between 5 and 9 inches and fat.
I could have caught more but,I only kept 6 for bait.
I was hoping for a pike.I know they do the pond shiner thing at Bantam and catch Pike,Lg and Sml mouths.
I used to be a strickly bait man but when i started fly-fishing. i kind of drifted away from it and it became a (if all else fails) strategy. Although,I'll never pass up a school of bunker. Very Happy

I think next time Im at windy I am going to have to try and catch some bait fish. Great Pike bait! I never noticed them before but I guess theres a reason why the bass are so fat there no shortage of bait to eat.
