After getting home from doing some surf fishing I headed up to the ice out pond. Hardly ever fish it in the summer due to heavy woodland vegetation and having to ride a bike up a steep hill.
Arrived around 1:45pm and started by throwing a rainbow trout Flat Rap FLR-6. First cast and I got a hit but no hookset. Then set the hook on a cookie cutter.
Decided to play with a 1/8oz Rooster Tail to see if a small spinner might work. That was the ticket!
As I made all my usual stops I stuck with the Rooster Tail mostly and occasionally played with the FLR-6. Landed a total of 5 more largemouths all on the Rooster Tail. 4 of them were cookie cutters being no bigger than a post spawn 15" 1 pounder and the other was a 20" 4 pound 6 ounce post spawn pig!
Second pig I've ever landed at the ice out pond. Handled it with a 5'6" light power rod and 6 pound Sufix Elite. First pig since April.
Later I got the Rooster Tail stuck on a tree limb. Line snapped and saw it drop in the shallow water. After about a half hour of patience between weather, sky, and water clarity while raking with a long branch I was able to get it back.
Then I headed down to Twin Brooks Park. Stuck with the Rooster Tail and FLR-6 and also tried throwing the silver shad Jointed Shad Rap JSR-4 in some areas. Landed 2 bluegills and 1 bluegill-pumpkinseed hybrid with the Rooster Tail and 1 largemouth and 1 rock bass with the FLR-6. First time I've caught a rock bass at Twin Brooks.
Later while I was at my last stop at Twin Brooks Park I got the Rooster Tail snagged on a tree limb. Line snapped while working on trying to get it off and stayed stuck on the branch.
Spent about 45 minutes at the funeral home pond. Played around with an olive green muddler X-Rap XR-4 and caught an aggressive 8" pumpkinseed and a dinky 4" bluegill.
Decided to liveline the bluegill knowing there's largemouths in there that will chase a smaller fish you're reeling in. Second cast and see the bluegill start to quickly head towards shore before being trapped and taken by a largemouth. Set the hook and landed a chubby 16" 2 pound 6 ounce largemouth.
The bluegill was still slightly alive so I threw it back out there. Didn't have any signs of bass looking at it in the area I caught the 16"er so I threw it in another area where I was seeing some bass swimming around. One bass kept looking at it as the bluegill started dying off but never took it.
Before leaving I threw a 4" Texas rigged Berkley Power Worm in the last area I had the bluegill in. Caught a 13" cookie cutter and a 16" 2 pound 2 ounce large mouth.
Hit the road around 8:30pm. |

Sounds like a real good day. Nice job! _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |
