Nobody has ever really posted a report for Lake Winnemaug in Watertown and I fished it this morning so I figured I might as well. My buddy called me up last night and asked if I wanted to go out at 4:30-5am today and I said yes. We put his little aluminum boat with a trolling motor in the lake by 5:20am. Within 10 minutes I caught a dink on a Zoom Horny Toad. I thought it would be a real good morning. There are a ton of well defined weed beds in the lake as well as a couple nice islands. We basically tried to hit a bunch of weeds and when that was failing we turned to the shore and hit fallen trees and rock structure. We were there until just after 10am and in that time we boated a total of 6 LMB. I got 4, 3 on a Senko and the one on the Horny Toad. My buddy got one on a mouse lure and one on a swimbait. The two best catches were a 3.5 and 2.5lber that I got on the Senko.
Overall it was a solid but very slow morning. We kept expecting there to be fish in all the typical places but were not getting nearly as many hits as we thought we would. _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |

Is there a boat launch here, or what's the deal? |

There is a very very small dirt ramp. You couldn't launch anything bigger than what we did, It's a good spot for a kayak or canoe but not much bigger. _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |

Did you happen to check the water temperature, Stephan? The water temperatures in the lakes and ponds I've been fishing have been all over the place. Woodcreek Pond is so warm that the largemouth bass are probably mostly done spawning, but Bishop Swamp is cool enough that the spawn is probably on right now. If the largemouth bass are spawning, you won't find them in any of the usual places. The big girls will either be on beds or staging in deeper water. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

I didn't check the exact temperature, but I can tell you that it was very cool compared to the last couple places I had been before. I would guess they were probably still in a spawn but we didn't see much in the way of beds. _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |

Wow....no pickerel!? The place is loaded with them. The island in the far back corner and all the way around that point leading to it. The weed beds are beautiful this time of year, but tend to get really thick from July on. Try throwing a spinner bait next time you're out there. The bass in that pond crush them! Also, did you see any carp? I've never seen them jump out of the water like they do there. They go nuts over the bugs on the water. |

Yeah no pickerel at all. Not even any hits.
The weed beds seemed great but they weren't really holding much in the way of fish.
I thought about tying on a spinnerbait but never got around to it. I definitely will next time.
Didn't see any carp up close but saw just one jump near the shore a decent ways away from us.
Thanks for the info! _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |
