Got over to my old stomping grounds, the start of the Wndsor Locks Canal System in Suffield. Great spot for bass of literally ALL VARIETY, I mean from 40"striper to 6" rock bass. I managed to get there for 8 this morning and unfortunately 2/3 of my "go to" spots were taken, damn. I posted up against a ledge along the canal and tied on a Bomber 4a in shad color and started making my casts.
Keep in mind I just showed up not too long ago and these guys that were there before me are now hearing my drag freaking out Smile ill tell ya this lure is really amazing to me this year. It's got a hard side to side motion and is extremely responsive to your commands. I had it going down to 4 feet then back to 2 and so on in what I would call slightly dirty water although the sun was helping at times.
All told I bagged 5 smallies with the lunker at 18 7/8" and a few real nice rock bass all around 8-9". I threw a night crawler just once as this place has a habit for also holding bull bluegills. First cast I pulled up a "getting fatter" 8" that just looked hungry haha. Best part about it was all the action came very fast from 8-915 so it sped the morning up!

Were you fishing the canal side or the river side in front of the lock where the water pools up before it goes over the dam? I've never caught much on the river there, even when it was shallow. When I was a kid a looonnngg time ago, you used to be able to climb down on the dam when it was real shallow in the summer. Now it's all fenced. It seems the canal side is real real shallow. I use to catch nice bass from the grass side in front of that little brick building.

Growing up in WL we used to take our bikes from downtown, I'd fish where stoney brook went under, the train bridge and where that pond behind the VFW off of North main street went into the canal. Also, the south end before it became all over grown was a nice spot. I caught a nice small mouth a couple of years ago where the canal drains into the river near the rt 91 bridge piling.

I went down there a few days ago w/ my father and daughter.
I wish they'd let us canoe it

My personal best smallmouth bass came out of Stoney Brook 24" and 5.9 lbs in midsummer on a top water. I fish it from Boston Neck Road after the falls allllll the way to the CT River. Have caught an absurd amount of trout there as well. I'm from Suffield and have Stoney brook as a backyard when I was younger, so naturally it has a real soft spot for me.
