I paddled Seymour Reservoir 4 with coastieyaker (aka Pete) from 11:00 am to 2:45 pm. Neither of us had been to the Seymour Reservoirs before and we wanted to check out all of them, but we parked in the lot near Reservoir 4 and didn't go any further:
So, are they the Seymour Reservoirs or the Oxford Reservoirs? I brought my Hurricane Santee 116 Sport, El Habañero, for me to paddle and my Future Beach Trophy 126 DLX, La Calabaza, for Pete to paddle. Although there was a little bit of sun when we arrived, clouds rolled in and the sky got progressively more overcast as time went by. The air temperature was in the mid to upper 60s until the wind rose out of the south and rain began to fall at about 2:30 pm. We paddled from the south shore to the cove on the east shore of the reservoir to get out of the slight breeze that blew out of the south. The water was clear down at least four feet, but had a greenish tinge to it. The weeds on the bottom looked like they're still dormant and were covered with slimy brown sediment. It was hard for me to see the bottom because I wasn't wearing sunglasses and there was a lot of glare on the water from the overcast sky, but I never spotted any beds in the shallows. Pete and I both banged the shore with wacky rigged Senkos. He threw a three inch Senko, while I threw a Light Green Pumpkin/Small Red Flake five inch Senko. Although I got a lot of taps from sunnies on my Senko, it wasn't until 12:44 pm that I got a real bite. I threw my wacky Senko toward the shore, and was talking with Pete as he glided toward my line between me and the shore, when the line started moving toward him. Fast! I could tell that it was a good fish by the weight on the line. Luckily, it swam toward me and down, and the line barely cleared the bow of Pete's kayak. I loosened up my drag and tried to keep pressure on the line, when the fish suddenly rose and leaped completely out of the water. It was a smallmouth bass! Unlike most of the lake or pond smallies that I had caught in the past, this one fought like a river smallie. It leaped into the air and tail walked like a kokanee salmon for a couple of minutes, before I was finally able to tighten up the drag, again, and get it next to my kayak:
Whoo Hoo! It was a solid 19 inches long and weighed exactly three pounds. It picked up the Senko off of the bottom, so the slow presentation did the trick. A short while later, Pete boated a yellow perch with his wacky three inch Senko. I didn't get a photo of him with it, because he released it before I had a chance to take one. I had to explain to him that it never happened, because there's no photo. I'll get a photo of you with your next fish, Pete. Not to be outdone, at 1:24 pm, I got a small yellow perch of my own with my wacky five inch Senko:
Three minutes later, I got a good bite from a fish that I quickly realized was another nice smallie:
I cut off its head in the photo , but it was 18 inches long and weighed 2-3/4 pounds. Again, it hit a very slowly presented wacky rigged Senko. We worked our way counterclockwise around the cove and along the north shore to where Pines Brook babbles into the reservoir. At 2:15 pm, we began to feel an occasional small raindrop. By 2:30 pm, it began to rain, not hard, but enough that we paddled back to the south shore and quickly got off of the water. Athough we had just a short paddle, I finally got to meet Pete. And, Pete, let me know when you want to check out Reservoir 3, Reservoir 2 and/or Reservoir 1. I'd still love to check out all of them. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter!

Awesome! And people say there are no fish in 4
People from Seymour typically know them as the Oxford Reservoirs but people on here seem to call them Seymour Reservoirs... _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |

I forgot to mention that the lot where we parked is directly across the street from 357 Chestnut Tree Hill Road in Oxford, near the intersection with Krystalle Lane. On my way home, I drove past the lot that's near Reservoir 1. It's at the intersection of Old Litchfield Turnpike (aka Water Company Road) and Pines Bridge Road (aka Route 42). I took a photo of the sign as I drove past it:

That was a darn fun day and thanks for letting me borrow the FB. I cant believe how stable it is!
Its a shame our day was cut a little short because of the rain but we will certainly check out the other reservoirs soon enough!
It was good to finally meet and I look forward to checking out some spots with you in the future.

Two words: Bucket Biologist. I couldn't say for sure, but I suspect they were both Connecticut River fish. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

Could be out of the Naugy as well, although those don't typically get that big. Who knows for sure, but I'm happy they're there. _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |

Ive caught them on fly rods and i catch alot in candlewood. mightve been just two really healthy and strong fish. Sound sbetter than my day at lillinonah! |
