Member gkolyagin (aka Genna) and I hit the Reef Memorial Day morning. Low tide for Black Rock Harbor was scheduled for 7:45am. We got there around 4:30am.
We worked our way all the way out to the cows without any luck.
Genna tried throwing a few pencil poppers, SP Minnow, Bomber Long A, and 9" Sluggo. I played with flake purple ghost Max Rap MXR-15, chrome purple black MXR-15, pearl grey shiner Flat Rap FLR-16, and mullet Saltwater Skitter Pop SSP-12.
I had a striper come up for the FLR-16 when I went to take it out of the water. Got a bluefish hit on the same lure. Genna didn't have any luck with a Lloyd's pencil popper and no bites taken out of Sluggo's.
Only thing we saw as for fish on was a fly fisherman who said he caught a sea robin. No birds working any bait and no signs of bait.
Headed back in around 8am. |

Not the "cow stripers", the "cow area" of the Reef.
Town of Fairfield has history about that area of Penfield Reef. |

Michael, I feel for your feet right now. I've done many trips out to the cows with out a single bite, and man is it frustrating, tiring, and time consuming.
However, I used to have great luck with the daytime bite on the reef starting june..... dying right when the snappers make there way in. If you move slow and have good lighting you can usualy see them swiming over the strip of white shells that runs the lenghth of the reef on the left hand side. I generally keep my eyes on the shells b/c it provides the best contrast when looking in the water. Bring your polorized glasses or your completely missing out
Back in the day, my go to was always an unwieghted femlee eel and when the bite would get tough I would use sandworms on a 3 way swivel with a bober. Both methods you simply cast on the opposite side of the reef, let your lure drift over, then start jigging the crap out of it right when it's about to pass over the top of the reef.
What most people don't understand is that most of the fish (when the reef is submerged) are either sitting on top of the reef, or 0-20ft to the side of the reef in the rip. 3/4 of the people out there have bass swimming inches from there feet and they don't even see em. When you start casting wayyy out there, you are gonna get dominated by blues, which maybe your target
Just typing this is getting me too excited....... I gotta go hit that place up soon.... its been way too long.
Did the reef get flattened out from the storm pretty good? Are the Mussell beds out by the cows still existent? Thanks for the info. |

mussel beds are still there but the first half of the reef is even more flat then before. 2nd time we went to the reef in the morning and nothing there. Only sign of life i saw was the tiny puffer fish in the mussel beds at the tip. |
