Arrived at the launch at 6:30am. About 40 boats in the parking area ready to launch. They were kind enough to let me launch in between. It was a club from the NY/NJ area. Real nice bunch. Idled out of the no wake zone and chatted with a few only to find out it was the second day of a two day tourney. I figured the lake got hammered the day before and didn't expect much.
Started out with the Heddon Spook One Knocker. My partner started with a Hula Popper red/white with a white buck tail treble. Right from the gitgo we started getting small blowups but couldn't hook up. About 30 minutes later I hook up with a 3lb Large Mouth. The wind started to pick up so I switched to a whacky rigged senko Watermellon Red Flake and snagged another 3lb Large Mouth. The bite started to die down so we moved to some rock ledge in the Danbury Bay. Hooked up with a small mouth bigger than the first two and it fought like a son of gun. Worked it to the boat and as my partner reached with the net the fish broke the surface and snapped my fluorocarbon 8lb test.
After that fished most of the small bays and picked up keeper size large and small mouths through the day. Water temps were 60deg by noon. Spotted only one nest that was empty. I think the temp drop the night before messed up the fish.
The spawn may only be in the beginning stages at this point. I would expect that with in a week the shallows will be loaded. All the fish caught today were in 12 to 20 FOW. The water was stained and difficult to see more that 5 feet deep.
Overall a decent day. Top Water is starting on the bigger lakes and the Whacky Rig is definitely a go to technique. The fish were inhaling the whacky rig and made hook removal a chore at times. Never felt the bite. Only saw the line go limp or move.
I had numerous follow ups with the Scatter Rap but no hook ups. Four of the fish caught had alewives tails in their gullet. Tried to match the hatch but no luck.
Didn't bother to take photo's. We've all seen 3lb fish before. _________________ Don't hold your farts in! They travel up your spine to your brain and thats where shitty ideas come from.

The areas I fished were in stained water. Only saw that one bed and that was in the marina area to the right of Latin's Cove. Went as far up as the New Milford Arm. Hit almost every bay along the way and only saw that one bed. Didn't flip any jigs. Maybe I should try that next time. _________________ Don't hold your farts in! Yep! I was chatting with a buddy tonight about that. The couple decent ones I got were deeper at about 15/20 FOW.
Fishing Bantam Sunday. Gonna try a couple creature baits. _________________ Don't hold your farts in! They travel up your spine to your brain and thats where shitty ideas come from. |
