I learned Phil was landing a bunch of fish at my other local fishing hole(Spring Pond) so i decided to crash the party and launched the yak at 6pm.
I met Phil (aka PECo) and Mark (aka mep21).

Long story short, topwater frogs (Stanely Ribbit & Zoom Horny Toad) from 7pm to 8pm. Landed 5 and just as many misses.

After Derek, Mark and I fished Lake Basile in the morning, we had lunch in Simsbury, before Derek had to head home, and Mark and I headed down to Nod Brook WMA to fish some more. As always seems to be the case on the weekend, the entire area was closed so that it could be monopolized by a club that was holding a field dog trial. Rolling Eyes

Mark and I fell back on Plan B, which was to head down to Spring Pond. We got on the water at the culvert on the west shore of the south cove at 3:15 pm. I got on the water before Mark and threw a Bullfrog Zoom Horny Toad on a red Nunber 4 Gamakatsu Offset Shank Worm EWG (i.e., Extra Wide Gap) Hook at a laydown that's right next to the culvert. I got a hit from a fish that pulled the frog down into the laydown. When I set the hook, I missed the fish, but caught the laydown. Confused

Although missing a fish sucked, I was excited to see that they were still hitting topwater frogs. Very Happy

As I worked my way down the west shore, Mark headed to the east shore. Tight to the shore, I got a hit on the frog and set the hook on a really nice largemouth bass. It was probably the fattest fish that I caught, but it took the frog upside down and I set the hook very deeply into its tongue, which caused it to bleed profusely. Confused

After I got the hook out, I immediately released it. Only a few minutes later, I got another hit and set the hook on the consolation fish, which was a 13 inch largemouth bass:

At about 4:00 pm, Mark and I decided to head up to the shallows in the northwest corner and along the north shore. For the first time, I saw clear evidence of bedding activity:

From 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm, we each caught several small largemouth bass:

Although they were generally bigger than the fish that we had caught at Lake Basile in the morning, none of them weighed more than a couple of pounds. At 6:00 pm, we decided to head back to the south cove and check the shallows there before heading off of the water. As we approached the south island, we spotted Jason paddling toward us. We all fished the south cove for a while. I didn't get much before Mark headed off of the water a 6:30 pm. But as he loaded his kayak onto his car and just before he drove past me, I threw a wacky rigged Green Pumpkin/Red Flake five inch Senko at the shore and it was picked up by a 16 inch long, 2.29 pound largemouth bass:

Yeap, I held it up for Mark to see as he drove by. Cool

Jason and I fished around the south cove and the south island for a while before finally heading up to the northwest corner. We stopped to fish around the north island, where Jason showed me what the lunker would really look like, when he boated a 17 inch long, 2.33 pound largemouth bass:

It really hurt to get beat by only .04 pounds! Laughing

Although we both caught some fish in the northwest corner, Jason caught more than I. I lost a battle with a fish at the mouth of the creek, when I missed it with a wacky Senko three times! Mad

As night fell, we headed down the west shore, back to the culvert and off of the water.
