At about 7:45 between studying for finals tonight I asked Ryan if he wanted to head out for like an hour of fishing and of course he said yes. We went to these two little ponds we have been to once before and didn't get much. I don't know the names of them but they're right on 195 near Uconn and are pretty small and right next to each other. When we got there, a dad and his son were fishing one so we went to the other. I was using a small tube and Ryan was using a larger tube I believe. Within 5 minutes we were both getting hits and I landed maybe a 10" bass. I was happy to catch one and wanted to finally catch something topwater, so I put on a jitterbug which is my favorite lure. Got a hit maybe 3 casts in right after it hit the water. I threw it back to the same area and just twitched it a few times and got another hit. I set the hook on a slightly nicer 12" bass. Went back to the tube and caught an ambitious 5" bass. At this point we had like 15 minutes left so I moved to another area. I saw a pretty big splash near the shore so I threw the jitterbug near it. As I'm reeling it in I see a wake following it. I pause the lure and do 3 quick twitches and BAM! get the big hit. I thought there were only very small fish in the pond but this one was fighting really hard. I finally pulled it up through the weeds and onto shore and it became my best catch of the year so far!
It weighed just over 3lbs but it was nice to finally get something worth weighing! A few minutes later we hit the road with Ryan having nothing more than a couple hits to show for his time. He's young though, he'll learn from the master before long.
I have been catching most of my fish the last week or so on a small brown salted tube. Nothing big or anything, but it has worked everywhere, so if you're having some trouble getting into them, consider using one. All the hits I got on the jitterbug were when it was just sitting there twitching, never during a retrieve. Ryan got a couple hits on a popper too, but couldn't set the hook. _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |
