It was such a nice day, i knew it was time to skip work and take a half day.
I decided to take the kayak down to the Ct river in Portland and try Wrights cove
I had a rapala husky jerk tied on so I tried that and it didn't take me long to hook into a decent 16 and half inch bass.

I was going to stick with the rapala but kept getting hung up on weeds so I went to an orange buzz bait and was able to hook into another bass

I then went to a green and orange frog popper I had and just before I was ready to take it off and try something else, i hooked into an 18 inch bass

After that, I had a problem keeping fish on the hook and lost at least 4 including a nice sized bass and what looked like a bowfin.

I started fishing at 2:30 and stopped around 5:30. Good to see the fish hitting the top water stuff.

Nice, Dave! Where did you launch?

I think it's called Portland Boat Works.
I take Grove street off of Rte 66 and it's at the end down on the left.
They charge 5.00 for a kayak.

Are you sure that it's not Yankee Boat Yard & Marina? In any case, you could launch for free from the other side of the river at Harbor Park in Middletown. Wesleyan University and Middletown High School have boathouses for their crew teams there, and there's a nice concrete ramp:

No, it's not the Yankee launch, it's the next boat yard down from that one.
It's right next to the river going into wrights cove.

Yes I've launched at harbor park before but I had to be home by 6:00 so I wanted to get there as quick as I can.

I just took a look at Google Maps and saw the Portland Boat Works marina. Yeap, that's probably worth the $5.00, if you just want to paddle into Pecausett Pond.

I've launched at Portland Boat Works a bunch of times last year. For the price for kayak and boat they are very reasonable. Once the RH Ferry Park starts charging I will be launching in Portland...which is Memorial Day.

Nice report, good looking fish. How is it getting into there now? I know at the end of last year there was a tree blocking the canal going in. Can you fit a boat in there now?

Someone cut the tree that was blocking it off but it's still hard to get in with a boat.

If the tide is high, you can get a small boat in but don't get caught at low tide.

It was dead low tide when I was leaving and I had a hard time getting the kayak out of there.

Thats too bad, there are some good fish in there. I have a 17' boat that fits in a lot of places, but if a kayak has a tough time... don't know if I would like to risk it.

BTW, I see you have a Hampton Beach shirt, I've been going there for 30 years now, nice place to vacation at.
