Monday night I did my overnight trick so I could hit the early morning bite I heard about along the sandbar at Remington. Arrived at the destination with waders, bigger plugs, and my Sea Striker SS800 Penn Sargus 5000 setup just after 5am.
Low tide was scheduled for 9:49am and I worked the outgoing tide and stayed til about 8am. Plugs I tried throwing included chrome purple black Max Rap MXR-15, chrome spotted minnow Max Rap MXR-17, chrome Flat Rap FLR-16, pearl grey shiner FLR-16, fire chartreuse Saltwater Skitter Pop SSP-12, and original shad Glidin Rap GLR-12 all with not a single tap or swirl. Never saw any signs of bunker on the surface and there was only 1 cormorant there that never came up with any fish.
Seeing I still had time before dead low tide after giving up around 8am and the sun was getting higher, I decided to head home and quickly switch to my 7 foot MH Daiwa Procyon Penn Sargus 4000 setup and bring smaller plugs.
Got back around 9am and worked the rest of the outgoing and the first 2 hours or so of the incoming. Saw shiners thick out there which told me there were plenty of smaller fish around.
Lures I threw included chrome Skitter Pop SP-9, speckled trout Saltwater Skitter Walk SSW-11, pearl grey shiner Flat Rap FLR-10, purpledescent Clackin Minnow CNM-9, shad Shallow Shad Rap SSR-9, blue sardine Saltwater X-Rap SXR-10, and flake ayu Max Rap MXR-13.
Had a topwater bite going for a while with the SP-9. Total of 4 explosions and a number of swirls. Lost 1 with the SXR-10. Landed an 18" fish with the CNM-9. Caught 3 around 16" with the MXR-15. Hit a 20" striper with the FLR-10. Many other hits on those 3 plugs. The 20" striper gave me a good fight on the setup.
While I was wading out there and getting into the fish, I didn't see anybody land anything with sandworms. Hit the road around 1:45pm.
Wednesday I headed back over there after getting plenty of sleep and getting out of bed around 8:15am. Arrived around 9:30am with low tide scheduled for 10:48am.
Played with the same lures that were catching me the fish Tuesday. I wasn't seeing any signs of bait this time and saw 1 person with sandworms hitting lots of shorties no bigger than 16" with plenty of 12" fish. Also tried throwing a 4" pearl silver soft plastic rigged with a 3/4 ounce Hurricane jighead. Got a 12"er on the soft plastic. Switched back over to plugs and caught a 16"er on the FLR-10.
One plug surf fisherman who I'm familiar with came around the turn of tide and told me he was into a topwater bite earlier in the morning. He threw the same 2 lures he was getting lots of hits on earlier in the day but never had a single hit. Only landed a short 12" schoolie on a soft plastic.
Hit the road around 1pm
Tuesday was the best day I've had so far. The action I was getting that day is telling me that the fish are starting to get more active and they're moving closer to the surface. |
