I went out to the mouth of the Housy tonight after I got out of work. Got there at around 8pm to fish the 1030pm low tide. There were a handful of people there at the time dunkin' some bait. There were PLENTY of baitfish swimming around and breaking water.
I threw a FLR-10 silver shad, SXR-10 silver ghost, and Storm 5" bunker swim bait. I only managed a few light hits on the FLR-10 which were probably the shad. I saw two guys on the Naugy side land one keeper each. That was the only action I saw for the 2 1/2 hrs I was out there.
I'm not sure where the fish were since I was literally standing in schools of baitfish. I'm going to try to get back out there tomorrow and see if I can get my 1st striper of the year. I may even try dunkin' some bait while I cast my lures. |

I been fishing that area frequently and worms are taking almost 100% of the fish from what I'm seeing. |

I was on the Housy last night, as well, just upstream a bit in Derby. I landed one 26 incher. I was using something that I rigged up a few years ago. I use a white bucktail (which is a leap of faith on the Housatonic River bottom) topped off with a fluke-style Storm.
Damn fish was completely still while I walked him uip the river bank, then when I went to remove the hook he went all sorts of crazy, causing me to drop my pole. The ceramic guide at the tip of my pole broke, effectively ending my evening of fishing.
I tend to find that worms are more productive early in the season from shore, especially as you go downstream from the dam. |

That's a bummer! At least you caught a fish though I hit up the dam today around high tide and was it packed. It felt like opening day with the amount of people that were there on BOTH sides. |

It gets crowded like that this time of year. Some days it's almost like a poorly run party boat. When the right people are there, though, it can be amazing how well synchronized it can seem.
I'm going to head over there around dawn tomorrow. High tide is right after dawn. Hopefully it is not too crowded with yahoos. If the water is flowing I'll work the dam, if not I'll head further down stream. |

I agree Tom. When everyone pays attn to the person in front of them its like a well oiled machine or a gauntlet from a Stripers point of view with lures bombarding them! LOL. Then a few people who don't care or font know how it works gets involved and 12 lines get tangled together!!!! _________________ There's a fine line between fishing....

I was thinking about heading there myself in the AM. I haven't been able to catch jack the past few days at O'sullivans. I don't know if it's my lure selection, tide timing, location, or just the fish not being in those areas. I am a complete striper noob but I'll learn sooner or later. |

I was out before dawn this morning. Started fishing the dam at 5:00 am. Lots of herring, all over the place.
Caught a short (maybe 14 inches) at about 6:00. That's all she wrote. Fish were breaking topwater towards the center of the river. There were about 10 guys along the bank and only one other fish was hooked up - it looked like a 26 incher that was released. I had a swirl and that was it.
At 8 or so I moved down to o'Sullivan's Island and have nothing to show. Not a hit, swirl or look. Saw some individual fish breaking, but that's it. Again, though, the herring were thick and all over the place.
Went back to the dam afted an hour and nothing. Called it a day at about 10.
It was a beautiful morning, though. |
