I plan to go to winchester this weekend hopefully to catch some pike.

Has any of you fished there this year yet?
Has any of you fished there around this time last year?

I've only caught one pike in my life and that was out in Kent on a jerk bait (while fishing for lmv)

Any suggestions on spots / game plan to MAYBE catch some?

I will be doing some research here and there but, I figured I bring it up here incase others have had luck there.

I havent open water fished it yet but i usually hear alot of good things around the stumps on the far north end from the boat launch if you have a boat. Otherwise i guess the best thing to do is keep moving around the lake.

Stumps usually produce at that place pretty good. I tend to spend a lot of my time around the stumps. There are some very large bass in there. I have only caught a handful of pike in there but nothing respectable for a pike. Honestly if I was going to target pike I wouldn't go there but I know there are some decent ones in there. I know Phil told me he caught one a while back in one of the coves and it was big one. Hope some of this helped.

Yeap, I caught this northern pike at Winchester Lake with a big black buzzbait in the first cove to the left from the ramp on 08/14/2011:

I knew that it was there, because it had eaten two Zoom Horny Toads that mep21 (aka Mark) had thrown nearby. Neither of us had any steel leaders, so I tied on the buzzbait, because it was pretty long. It got mangled pretty badly and didn't survive the encounter with the pike. Wink

The pike was 35 inches long. I released it without weighing it because the water was warm. I couldn't really reach high enough with my digital scale to weigh it, anyway. Laughing

I went with my daughter last Friday. The wind was brutal so we gave up. I caught my first pike last August, 24 inches on a Rapala minnow, black/silver off the rip rap by the dam.

I will basically be using jerk baits and spinner baits.

I will probably drop a jig for some lmb

We just want to catch some fish to be honest picking up some pike would be a big bonus.

The morning is going to be COLD!!! Sad

we went here for HOURS about 830am in the water moving - about 430 or later i lost track of time

fished all over didnt see or catch any thing

until we went the tall / exposed stumps

we ended catching a bunch of small pickerel and crappie along with one LMB

the water was CLEAR
In some spots we could see 8 feet down

water temps ranged from 53º - 58º

my buddy lost his anchor on the side of a sand bar
out of no where the boat started to drift he looked back and it was gone

HE ALSO LEFT HIS FISH FINDER THERE, which was not there when we returned to get it!

the fish finder was a hummingbird 570 we didnt want to leave it ON the boat.

it would have normally been put inside the truck right after we detached it BUT we ended up putting the straps on so it was set down and left behind!

Sorry to hear about your gear, glad to hear that you got some fish into the boat. We tried Bantam, HIghland, And Burr this weekend, just got the boat back in the water and my daughter/co-captain is really exited to catch some fish. Maybe we will give Winchester a go. Bantam and Highland were slow. A few interested fish but none that would give more than a tap. Tried suspending jerkbait, and 3-5ft. square billed cranks with slow retrieve. The Pickerel are active at Burr, hitting the same lures, and one dink lmb on the jerkbait.

Don't ever give up on Winchester! For as many bad trips as you'll get out there (and there will be a ton!), there are always the ones that will pay off for the work put in! Both of these came out on chartreuse spinners.
