Anyone ever fish for striper at the mouth of an alewive run here in CT? I got the chance to do this last year and it was amazing. There seemed to be only smaller stripers feeding but maybe I wasn't using the right lures to target the larger ones in this situation. Any advice on what to use to target the larger fish lurking during an alewive run?

Agreed! you can get them during the later daytime hours but once darkness hits it becomes more active! Bombers and Bucktails work well also. Sebille Magic Swimmers do well also.

Have not tried the buckers when alewives are present Mr. W. Will give it a shot. Bigger seems to do better around alewives as CDadeez recommendations illustrate. Sloooooowwww at night too.

I'm relatively new to striper fishing. When do alewives usually start their run? I managed to hit it just right one night in May last year at the mouth of a creek, got 4 keepers in about ten minutes on big poppers.

Rapala Flat Rap FLR-16 and Rapala Max Rap MXR-15 & 17

Look for certain pearlescent, gray, and ghost white colors. Purple too.

Have you seen some? Ive seen a little splashing going on here and there but not sure if it was Shad or Herring or something else like schoolies starting to get a little active.

i happened upon them in early september. THICK!!!!!! But i was trying to mimic the alewives, they were tiny. I suppose that's why I only landed schoolies. Thanks guys.

That's a different situation. The spring herring are sbout 8-12" . That's why i suggested big lures. I would still try bigger lures when you run into the small herring again for a while unless you get no takers. Big Plugs sometimes means big fish. If you don't catch switch to something around the same size as the bait fish or just a little bigger.

I second what CD said about matching the size of the bait.

When the smaller silversides and sandeels are thick in the surf before the bunker show up, I'm throwing 3/4 oz tins and lighter plugs ranging from 3" to 4 1/2". But when the bunker get thick and the larger herring and shad are around, I'm throwing plugs ranging from 5" to 8".

Local Bridgeport fishing buddy Jose (CTFT member junkie) told me today that yesterday while he was taking a bike ride through Beardsley Park, he saw the first osprey of the year.

That usually means that the alewives are starting to make their way up the Pequonnock River.

There's nothing absolute in fishing,.. But generally, bigger fish don't like shallow areas in the daytime (unless it's very heavy overcast,...). Once the stripers are on alewives, I rarely throw anything smaller than a 9" Houdini. I've seen people that cannot buy a bite with 6-inch plugs when guys right next to them are getting killed on larger baits!! This is especially true once there are big fish around!!

A 9 inch sluggo or Houdini is not that large of a bait,...you will catch 20 inch stripers with them, no problem!!
