| Ive been fishing the CT River (Hartford Area) for a couple years now and have never had luck with any Stripers over 30 inches. I only use sand/blood worms so im guessing thats why. I was wondering if anybody has had any luck in the past using Chunk bait (other than the mouth of the river). Im trying to beat my personal best of 30' this season so any tips would help alot. Thanks! |

During the run i use both sandworms and i chunk mack or bunk. if i have the spare pole ill rig a bunk head like im fishing the sound on a 10ft surf rod with 2 oz of lead and whip it out deep other wise its about 1-2 inch chunks and mack seem to produce more in the river than bunks. Also since fresh bait isnt available i always use bunker oil or herring scent on my baits. if you can snag a shad or too it wouldnt hurt for fresh bait.. BTW i chunk around the windsor locks/enfield area. |

Some big stripers will be gathering in the Hartford area pretty soon. Eels at night around the bridges are also a good tactic. I'll be drifting eels before too long.

| Thanks guys im going to give both of those methods a try this year, @ Iversonbaby have you had a lot of luck chunking or do you find sandworms better? |

| its all about the sandies early on. I went thru a flat today with the GF. fish seem to be south still. we fished saybrook and haddam with lots of schoolies up to 22 inches. I find mackerel to be very good dipped in bunker oil |

| Nicee. we been getting a bunch of 16 and 18 inchers over in East Hartford with the sandies, im not gonna even try chunking for at least another 2 weeks, Have you had luck wit the Mack diped in bunker oil in the Hartford/Enfield area or just mostly the mouth. |

| up in enfield. when they get thick up here I start chunking and using eels. live. the mackerel is a bit sweeter and the smaller size seems to be more appealing for 20 inchers and up I don't go full out beach mode with bunker heads and massive chunks bc I use 2/0 striper hooks vs 5/0 bluefish rigs |

Do you ever fish thompsonville? I caught a schoolie striper there once maybe like 7 or 8 years ago with a chicken liver fishing for cats. I have yet to catch a keeper, but I think this year will be it.

| dont know if its legal but 2years ago in the windsor area of the ct river from shore i was live lining white perch for stripers. unreal didnt matter time of day was like candy to the stripers |

Years ago before I started fishing mainly plugs... I would fish with shad strips from either Little's bait and tackle in Cromwell or go right to Hale's right next to the Rocky Hill launch on the CT river. Fresh shad strips or chunks are a good choice in the river in the spring.
