NWS was calling for NW winds up to 13 mph for the morning and early afternoon Saturday with winds decreasing and becoming SW at less than 10 mph by 3pm. That told me the ice out pond would be a good place to go.
Started off at the funeral home pond around 1:45pm as I waited the winds out. Caught 2 dinky bass with a purple sunfire Husky Jerk HJ-6 by doing that 2 to 6 jerks retrieve. Switched over to a hot mustard muddler X-Rap XR-4 to play with the bluegills and see if any yellow perch were active. Had bluegills slowly following the lure and staring at it on the pause. They'd lightly peck at it on the pause but never set the hook.
Later I looked at my cell and saw it was 2:30pm and felt the winds had started dying down so I headed for the ice out pond.
Once I got to the ice out pond temps had warmed up, sun got stronger, and winds were under 10 mph with a few breezes around 8 mph.
Started off at the hot spot and saw bluegills and bass stacked up. Decided to go to a spot right near there where I get good visibility and casting access. Threw the HJ-6 out there and caught a 10" bass. Had others looking at it and following it.
Decided to check out all other open spots before going back to the area around the hot spot. One of them was a cove but fish weren't thick in there like they usually would be. Didn't catch anything there. One other spot had bluegills and bass interested in the HJ-6 but they never hit it.
Got back to the hot spot area and landed 2 more cookie cutters with the HJ-6. Before leaving I decided to see what they would do if I played topwater with something small. Took a shad Shallow Shad Rap SSR-5 and did 2 different types of topwater retrieves with it. That got a 12" bass around a pound to come up for it on the pause.
Once it was 5pm I headed for the private lake.
I hit my usual areas at the private lake to find it not too productive no matter what I threw. Did catch a 12" bass on the purple nurple X-Rap Shad Shallow XRSH-6 while doing a 2 jerks and pause retrieve. Caught a 15" 1 pound 10 ounce largemouth with the usual producer, silver shad Jointed Shad Rap JSR-4.
Hit the road just after 6pm. |
