Today was extremely windy. Gusts up to 24 mph in the Windsor locks area. The current was also extremely fast. Not sure what weight would be needed to keep your bait down but I certainly didn't have it.
PECo,
I have found the spot you mentioned. Right off North Water Street, empty lot with clear path down to the river |

If you can throw a big football head jig against the upriver side of a piling and let it drift downriver on the bottom with the current without snagging up, you might get smallies. _________________ Don't forget to wear sunscreen and don't litter! |

besides the pilings, there isn't much structure around those bridges, either under the water or by the shore. I caught a nice smallmouth by 91 bridge on the WL side near where the canal and river meet but this summer when the water was low I walked out and it's mostly sand, gravel and a couple of street lights that have fallen in the water. If you can get up to near where Stoney Brook flows into the river near the WL/Suffield border or up near what as kids we called Devils island (I think because the clams were poisonous....heck we were kids) there could be some action there...maybe launch in enfield and try north of the dam. I really don't know how far you can from WL to Enfield before the dam. |

the pair were caught on sandworms. the 12 pounder was caught on a sunfish chunk. hooks for the smaller 2 were 1/0 striper hooks. I had a larger circle hook for the larger cat. 1-2 oz of lead I fish from up top on the bridge and cast down into the slower eddies while trying to avoid the main current when the water is fast. im not a fan of using more than 5oz of lead at any given time. when the water is in its summer phase you can hold bottom with 2oz just about anywhere off the bridge and it really opens the spot up more. but in the spring like now when im after linesiders the current is fast and I try and hold the slower pockets with my bait. |

its a good spot for us landlubbers. esp during the spring run. ill be over there this morning before work. sandworms seem to be hot this time of year. a dozen or two of those and youll have tight lines. |

I have used the dough balls that are store bought and have caught nothing at all. Now home made dough i heard can be very successful. _________________ "Come after Me, and i will make you to become fishers of men"

i've never caught anything on dough either, but i caught a few descent sized cats on nightcrawlers last year with about a half ounce of weight on the line fishfinder rig in the ct river at the cromwell landing, i also had a monster one day on a whole yellow perch i caught and chunked out there. |
