I tried Berkley Vanish on a spinning reel and found that it broke off too often for me. I've had a completely different experience with P-Line Fluoroclear. Last year, I boated a 28 inch striped bass with eight pound test. It's hard to break it off even when you're trying to break it off.

Berkley vanish is crap IMO. I had the same issue with it breaking off on me way too often. I use seagaur 10lb test on my baitcaster.

Echo the opinions of Berkley Vanish. One and done with that crap.

i have been using vanish great stuff and NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS!! - i also use SUFFIX again no problems!

but really have more of the good old fashioned mono in use (maxima ultra green lines 4-6-8-10) i have used maxima for well over 25 years! - maxima lines are rated 2 lbs above the actual line rating (4lb has a breaking point of 6lbs) and so on!

in the spring the 4lb test is simply the BEST for TUBE fishing! i have had very few break-offs due to line failure if any!

t[b]hat being said i only use the above on my spinning reels - for a bait caster i use braid and tie on a leader of flouro using a surgeons knot

I gave up on fluorocarbon lines as a main line. I use braid. 30 and 40 lb test with a flouro leader. it just works for me. allot of the lakes I fish are stationed so sometimes I tie direct.

I use 10 lb super braid with no leader. It is green and doesn't seem to put off the fish. Are there any major advantages to tying in a fluorcarbon leader?

If you believe it matters, fluorocarbon line is less visible than braid at the lure, and it gives a little bit of stretch when you set the hook. I've noticed that the guys who fish for schoolies stripers almost always use braided line with a fluorocarbon leader.

PECo-
Thanks for the quick reply! Since you don't seem to have a strong feeling on this I will take the easy route and forego the leaders unless there is a lot of feedback to the contrary.

Yeap, I'm skeptical about whether having fluoro leaders on braid is really more effective than not having them. Rolling Eyes But I have a leader tied on my schoolie striper setup, anyway. Laughing

one advantage to a leader i find is when fishing top water - braid is just to limp for most top water - hooks and props tangle and it is frustrating and it will chew up the braid - a leader of 12 lbs to start with is a must!

The tangling of braid (I use PowerPro) on the hooks of topwaters matches my experience. I will definitely try a leader. Any recommendation on the best weight for the fluorocarbon? I often get slammed by large pickerel.

Justin-

The Sunline link ends with "USA" when I look at your reply (and the link goes to a dead urul) but as I type this reply, if I scroll down, I see your message with the correct link ending in "America". If I go back to your original post the 'USA" reappears. That is mighty strange Exclamation

Anyhow, what makes it best for leaders and what pound test do you recommend?

Thanks

Aha! You fixed it just as I was writing, yes? I now see that you can edit existing posts, which I didn't expect.

i usually use maxima - only because i use it for my fly fishing - it's mono and strong - and floats - flouro does not - but i do not think it is a big deal - i just have spools of maxima - maxima line breakage is also rated 2 lbs above the label
6lb = 8
8lb = 12

and so on - i use 12lb and it works fine a length of anywhere from 6 to 10 tied on is perfect

Yeah that was their old link. The Sunline size and model depends on what you plan on doing with it. For leader material I'd use FC Sniper. If you're tying to braid learn the "Albright" knot. You can find a video on youtube for it. Size depends on what you plan to attach to it. Lighter sizes (7# - 10#) for smaller lighter baits, and (12# to 20#) for heavier baits you plan on fish through cover. You have to experiment. Do some research on youtube for Sunline. They have tons of videos talking about all the different models. Its really great line!
