rmflint (Ryan) and I decided that this was the week we were going to start fishing around Uconn again. I hadn't caught a single thing yet in a few quick trips and he had some success in Florida and one of his hometown ponds. After classes on Tuesday we headed out to Mono Pond where we were able to enter through a farm (with permission) and stayed for a couple hours. It was very shallow and we hit the area around beaver dams with Senkos, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jigs. Despite the fact that Ryan thinks he may have gotten a hit, we left empty handed. Perhaps the supposed fish kills had something to do with this. We then headed back to campus and hit Mirror Lake for an hour or so. I got my first bites of the year on a Senko but was unable to land anything. Just before we left, we hit the far corner, and Ryan caught his first Uconn bass of 2013.
It weighed in at 2lb 13oz and hit while he was basically letting a Senko dangle where water was running into the lake. After this we called it a night and went home.
On Thursday I texted him and said we should hit both ponds on campus and he was in. We started at Swan Lake and worked our way around. We didn't get any bites at all for a while. We were at the last spot we usually stop before heading out when I saw a nice 3-4 lb bass swimming around. I tossed my Senko its way, but it shot off into the depths. A few minutes later, Ryan said I should throw my Bluegill pattern Rapala that I had tied on to my other setup to try to coax the big boy into biting. I threw it out and almost immediately hit my first fish and LMB of 2013.
Quite a monster, I know.
Shortly after this, we headed to Mirror Lake. We started in our usual spot, but the fish weren't biting. Nothing all the way along until we got to the spot Ryan caught his the other night. We were both throwing Senkos but not getting any hits. About 5 casts in, I felt the lightest of taps, then let it tap again, then set the hook.
It was a nice 1lb 12oz standard Mirror Lake bass. I was much happier with this one than the pipsqueak from Swan Lake. We each took about 10 more casts and were about ready to call it a night. I was just floating a Senko in the same spot Ryan caught his on Tuesday and felt what was the slightest of tugs. I set the hook and pulled a bass that may have been the same one Ryan caught to the surface before it got off. A few minutes later we headed home.
All in all, it feels good to finally get the first fish of 2013 and this is definitely the earliest in the year I have ever caught a bass. Hopefully this will keep up and I won't have to deal with the skunk too much more this season _________________ The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. ~A.K. Best |
