went out on the river today from the cromwell landing at the end of river rd with Scott aka (fish-awn man) in his coleman crawdad. we put in at around 2 in the afternoon and decided to troll up to the mouth of the mattabasset. When we got to the bridge under rt 9 we thought it would be a good idea to try and target some pike, since i heard they spawn in the area, so we tied on some big spinners and started casting. we worked our way up into the mouth a bit further chucking the spinners, then decided to turn around after no luck and try trolling some deep diving crankbaits back in the deeper water of the ct river. after another half hour of that with no luck we motored across the river to the deeper channel on the portland side to try some jigging and see if i could get a cat on a fishfinder rig with some blood scented dough bait. no luck with that so then we trolled over to the island in the middle of the river and tried along the shore. Scott was tossing out a wacky rigged senko when all the sudden he got a nice hit! as he was reeling in, whatever he had on the line spat the hook Crying or Very sad it was the closest we came to a fish all day! Mad we motored around the island a bit more after that and i thought it would be a good idea to try out my new chatterbait rigged with a green speckled lizard trailer, of course this ended up being a not so good idea, cause on my second cast i got snagged and lost the lure Evil or Very Mad at this point it started getting chilly with the wind blowing and the sun going down so we decided to call it a day. All in all even tho we didnt catch anything its always good to get out on the water and fish and just bullshit with good company Smile Thanks again Scott for a good day on the water! Hopefully we'll have better luck next time with the weather warming up Very Happy

I usually have luck with a bait near the base of the bridge piers at the mouth of the Mattabesset River. Try throwing a jig of some sort or slow rolling a spinnerbait as deep as you can the next time.

Hey I remember you from cromwell, I just went to the matty yesterday on the canoe. Didnt see any panfish perch or bass and i was standing up in the canoe all day looking. No signs of life at all and right before we go to leave i hooked a pike as long as my arm but he just looked at me and spat the hook... wtf. I was using a Rapela Dives to 2-3 its great in the matty cuz its only 3 feet deep at high tide and you wont snag it on all the trees. Another week or so theyl be there.
Saw two other boats and they had no luck either.
