It was a beautiful day out Saturday and definitely went out on my bike to make a good day of fishing out of it.
Got to the ice out pond around 2:15pm to find areas of very, very thin ice where open water used to be, but it melted throughout the day.
Stuck with a helsinki shad Husky Jerk HJ-6 while doing a single jerk and 5 second pause retrieve. Had a few largemouths slowly follow closely and missed out on a bluegill. Fish seemed to be a bit more active this time compared to last and got closer with the lure too.
Later around 3:45pm I decided to head over to the private lake to check and see if there were any residents outside so I could find out if they filled the lake up yet. One person was outside doing yard work and asked him if they filled up the lake and if it was fishable. He said yes so I went to work.
Started off with the HJ-6 in a few areas. Had a few yellows slowly follow it and missed 1. Also had 1 largemouth look at it.
Decided to see if they were active enough yet for the traditional silver shad Jointed Shad Rap JSR-4. Never got any hits or followers on it.
Next I started tossing a custom painted X-Rap Shad Shallow XRSH-6 to find out that that was the lure they were looking for.
One area produced 2 largemouths while doing the single jerk and 5 second pause retrieve. One of them was 18". Weighed 2 pounds 9 ounces on my Cabela's digital scale but the online scales said 2.97 pounds. Girth was 11 inches.
Later I moved over to another productive spot. Found it to be the hot spot.
Stuck with the XRSH-6 and did the jerk and pause retrieve and also a very slow crank with the rod tip down. Both retrieves worked. Caught a total of 4 more largemouths ranging from 8" to 15" 1 1/2 pounds, 2 yellows, and 1 bluegills. Lost a small largemouth. One yellow was a chubby pregnant 9" female and the other was a dink. Bluegill was an average 8".
Hit the road around 5:45pm. |
